New Popup Conversion Build!
« on: Dec 12, 2019, 06:59 PM »
I finally found a cheap pop up camper to convert into my new shack. Picked it up for $200 and plan on stripping it down to the frame and building new. It will end up a pretty straight forward shack with a wood burner, TV, 12 volt system with a solar panel, computer fan ventilation, bench that will double as a bed and possibly a 2nd fold down bed. The trailer frame is 7x12. Ice is building quick so I’ve got a lot of work to do in the next few weeks, luckily I have some buddies helping out and shop to build it in

Good luck with the build.  I have done two pop up builds and it sure makes ice fishing enjoyable in nasty weather.  Good luck

Got the trailer down to the frame and going to run my wiring for trailer lights and then start building. I have 2” pink board to put down between the supports on the trailer frame and then the plywood floor on top. One question I have is what is the strongest way to attach the shack to the trailer? I have a few ideas but just curious what others have done. Hopefully this week some good progress will be made!

Coated deck screws. I used marine plywood in both of my builds. Coated screws were recommended.
Keep us posted on the progress.

Wyo Ice,

Did you also use the deck screws to the walls to the frame as well? I was thinking about screwing the floor in and then drilling through the frame and bolting the walls to the trailer frame. Or would screws be sufficient all around? Thanks

You want to drill right through the bottom plate, plywood, and through the trailer frame. Then fasten with bolts and washers. I built a travel trailer using Glen L plans, that’s the proper method.

Getting some more work done on the shack. Unfortunately with this warm weather we are having in Southern WI we aren’t building ice, and work is staying busier then usual. But hopefully shortly after the new year the shack should be ice worthy!

My deck to metal frame was probably overkill but I used stainless bolts through the bottom wall plate to the metal trailer frame.

Gettin more done on the shack, walls are up and windows/door are in. I got 24x24 sliding windows for $35 a piece that should work great. Waiting for my lights and computer fans to come in to start the electrical. After coming up with 1000 different layouts, my buddy and I decided the best plan for at least this season is for a wide open floor plan. We have the hole placement figured out and there will be a counter with cabinets across the front (to hide the batteries and electrical) but the rest of the shack will be wide open. That way we can see what works best and then build what we need this summer.

Getting more work done. Floor is in and solar panel is installed. Now just running wiring for lights, computer fans and TV. Then insulation and wood burner and she’s ready for the ice!

Looks good.  Build some skis with your scrap lumber.
