One things for sure, GM trucks don't float.  ;D

Hard lesson there, sounds like nobody got hurt. Be careful out there.

I think I did 25 miles or so across the ice Sat/Sunday in VT and thankfully stayed on top!

Ive only fished Winni once so the idea of driving it is scary.  Champlain is easy when you see campers on the ice.

I've had a truck on champlain 9 out of the last 10 years.  Last year was the first we didn't get a truck on the ice.  Hopefully everything holds nice so next week we can get on again!

North of 78 was mint if you have good snows.  Was nearly bottoming out the nils with the tanaka.

I was up there this weekend for the derby, and before we even had lines set a guy went for a swim. Thankfully like this situation everyone was OK. The ice was solid once you got out, but lots of varied ice on the shoreline. I had a set of 20ish holes punched out in ~5 fow, and a few holes only had 6” of crap white ice. 20’ away and there was 16” of black ice.

The edges will be junk after this weekend, and especially the areas where people have been driving on.

Good to know Z.  Will avoid late season Winni action.

I never had the cajones to take my truck out onto the ice, even way up north on multiple feet of ice. I just feel like it's an unnecessary risk. I don't want to replace my truck even though it's nothing special, or pay to get it pulled out of the drink. That tow service can't be cheap. I walk to my fishing spots, and if the walk is too far, it wasn't meant to be.

Last year in the Berks, about 50 people had vehicles on a lake (about 15" of ice), and when I had to take a long hike back to my truck to get something I forgot, a local guy told me to drive back out ("I guarantee this much ice can hold a tractor trailer"). I decided to walk. The next day I read about two vehicles going through that same lake on that very same day.

Anecdotal stories make for strong arguments.  To each is own.

I was driving all over Lake Morey. They had 24 inches, of great ice, only one problem though the snow height on the lake was coming up over my hood. Would make for a good commercial .

I wasn't trying to make an argument. Just sharing my opinion on the topic, along with a coincidental story about it. Not everyone is on this site to argue, but as you said, to each his own.
