I have never tried using them through the ice, but you should try em. The worms are a great choice in the summer.

They are tough to find because very few shops sell them in winter. I have found a few bait shops that do carry them.
Oh yea, they work very good on some days that the Gills won't bite on anything else.

If anyone finds leeches, PM me. ;D

Just think of a squirmy black leech swimming around under your dead stick. Oh baby!

I never really thought about using earthworms until last year.  I met a fellow at the lake and he could not find any wax worms.  He was using earthworms and the bite was the same between my wax worms and his earth worms.  The only thing I did notice it seemed to be much harder to hook the fish.

Gulp Earthworm tips are pretty good searching the flats. Horizontal tungsten jig and a ~ 1" piece, looks like the plastic wedgee, think it works better. Have tried a whole one under a bobber strung on similar to summer fishing, why not. Little ones tended to peck it to death, 'gills, perch and crappies, but every now and then a monster will annihilate it. Friend has tried real ones in the past, didn't think they were worth the hassle and made little difference, if any.

Tried leeches a few years back... hit the water and tied themselves in a ball. About as much action as a booger on a hook ;D

Yeah, you can't use leeches in the winter. What happened to your leech is what happens to all leeches. They don't like the cold.

I am not a big believer in nightcrawlers- or earthworms. They seem to attract way too many bullheads.

I was fishing dryden lake in NY this year when I found out the trout worms work great. I was using moussies all day and only cuaght 10 keepers when a guy set up near by. He tipped a black and gold pimple with half of a trout worm. He stated catching them right away.Buy the end of the day he had 30 keepers on the ice to my 14. He was only there 2 hours. The next day I tryed the same and it worked like a charm. I think it is something the fish dont see during the winter so it made them intresting. You can normally find them at walmarts left over from fall. Just check them before you buy. Good luck.
