We have some good lakes around here that produce monster gills. We don't keep em until they are 9-10. DNR put an 18" limit on bass. That has helped to grow the bluegill to pretty good size. Not too many crappie anymore though.

The smaller the better...two or three inchers are perfect.  Just hook them behind the dorsal fin and go catch something worth eating.

Around here the best sized gills to use for bait are between 7" - 10". I'm not sure what they catch down there but the reason I use those nice gills for bait is, if I don't catch any pike on those gills I just eat the bait.

I use the hand measure. It's fast and you always have it with you ;).
