Title: PVC questions: PVC size and cutting PVC for rod holders to use on buckets
Post by: straightShot on Dec 15, 2018, 06:06 PM
1. What size of PVC is a good size for rod holders on buckets?

2. What is the easiest way to cut PVC into pieces.?

3. What is the easiest way to cut slits for reels to slide into the holders?

I ask this since I've done this before, but it took way too long and it smelled awful.  I'm sure that someone on IceShanty has perfected this.

I use black poly (1") for my mine much stronger in the cold.  Cut poly with a hacksaw and don't have or need slots. I like to leave the inside open for flasher, thermos and ice scoops when moving from hole to hole. Also no room for 6 reels inside the pale.

1) I used a 12" piece of 1.5"OD sink drain pipe and cut it in half to make 2 sleeves.
2) The best way to cut it is with one of those small hack saws where the blade sticks out the end of the handle. This will allow you to cut them in half and cut the slots for the reels as well. I have used a utility knife to cut the slots as the drain pipe is not as thick as standard PVC...but obviously caution must be used.
3) To prevent pipe from cracking make sure there is enough play in the slots to put rods in and out yet hold them in place. The reels really don't move much even with a little slop. And when fastening sleeves to bucket, I used 1" 10-24 screws, a flat washer on each side of the screws as well as a lock washer on the nut side. Or you could forego the lock washer and use those nylon lock nuts. Either way, don't tighten down too much...just snug them up. They usually don't come loose. I just check them once in a while.

I have been using them for years and have yet to have one crack or break. Even made some for my tip-ups. Here's a pic that might help. Good luck.

x2 on Iceassin's idea. I don't cut the slot for the reels as deep and I use rivets with a washer. rivet from the inside of the bucket. drill holes near the ends of the tubes so that you can access the rivet to place the washer to the end of the rivet.

I used 1 1/2" pipe. I cut it on a tablesaw since its easy to set a jig to make straight rip cuts for reel slots that match perfectly. Any saw with teeth will work without stinking too bad, hacksaw, table saw, miter saw etc

I use a chop saw to cut my PVC.  1 1\4 or 1 1\2 diameter, whichever I can get free or really cheap.  Cut the top at a 45 degee angle the combos pretty well center them selves as they drop in.

I made mine like this but inside the bucket. No worries about breaking a reel handle or the slop all over rods. I cut slots in a bucket lid to enclose it during nasty weather but drill a few drain holes in bottom of bucket..
Bucket holds 6 rods and all accessories well with lid on..

Like that idea. Maybe another mod in the future.  ;)

I like this.  I found a few pieces in my plumbing stuff in my garage, and there's absolutely no weight to them.  I picked up a 5' piece of 1 1/4" PVC in the garage as well, and I could see my one-man sled getting incrementally heavier.  I'm going to use the drain pipes.
