Connecticut River Pike 12-1
« on: Dec 01, 2006, 06:40 PM »
I got out with a friend of mine today ahead of the cold front today. The weather is changing FAST here today, we actually have tornado warnings in the state now  :o With the front blowing in, I figured this may be our best (last) shot at some open water pike... We weren't disappointed ;D

We used mostly soft plastics but also caught fish on big X-Rap Rapalas and spinnerbaits

The fish were following the baits back to the boat all damned day and blowing up right next to the boat. I think I hooked only one on a spinner bait right at the boat. I had a couple more mid sized fish on a bubblegum Houdini in deeper water and a couple on the X-Rap... They were POUNDING the Rapala today. There were no doubts as to whether I had a hit or not

No, because we're in a river sytem we fish areas out of the current... This almost always means that we're fairly shallow, usually less than 8 feet. The plastics I use are called YUM Houdini Shads. We work them in the top 2 feet for the most part. They are a fairly heavy bait and by twitching them along, I can get a great side to side darting action out of them. Picture a Zara Spook on the surface... That same walk the dog action but underwater. Once you get used to working them, you can get them to go about 2 feet from side to side, Smaller twitches will tighten up the action. They wanted it fairly slow yesterday so there were a lot of pauses thrown in the mix

Nice pike!

Is there much pressure on the pike in the Connecticut? I'll bet most anglers don't target them do they?

Here are some pike and musky in the works in the background of my shop. I see a lot of them here in the upper midwest.

I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Nice pike Blaine!  My dad grew up in Connecticut, and spent MANY MANY MANY hours fishing the CT River.  I was born in Willimantic, but my family moved to NY when I was only 6 months old or so...I really want to get to Connecticut sometime soon to fish that river...either pike or spring stripers!  Nice Job!

Taxidermist, I take it that most of those are old mounts that you're fixing?

No, that is what they look like before the eyes are installed, the shrinkage is built up with an epoxy in the head area, fins coated, and they air brushed. Here's a pike after it's finished:

(Image removed from quote.)

There is a fair amount of pressure but the guys that really target them realize how special the bigger ones are and the great majority are C&R. Guys that choose to have a mount done usually get a replica...
