ice flys, this is the time of the year for them.these flys are made to look
like the chironomidae, chaboridae and others that live in the mud at the
bottom of the pond or lake and are not SPECIES SPECIFIC.--SIZE is the
key, then color, then action[movement in the water] and last place in the
water column.if you want to try this take a SMALL jig[12 or smaller] and
wrap peacock herl on the hook part of the jig, this has the same body sheen
of a ISONYCHIA[type of mayfly] or a BLUE WING OLIVE FLY
HOPE THIS HELPS

Great description of what perch are loaded with at this time of year.  The lake I have been fishing in is loaded with these and perch are glued to bottom.  A lot of fishermen overlook this phenomena and report that things were slow today.  Need to locate fish in deeper mud flats where they are feeding.  I tie an "ice fly" just above a marmooska jig and this seems to work.  I bounce the marmooska off the bottom which stirs up some mud and the perch come over to investigate.  Usually they will bite if what you are offering is close to what they are eating.  Most perch are stuffed with these at this time of year.

POT-BELLY
the bugs you see on the ice could be stoneflys these bugs
look like a roach? in black or brown with 6 legs two tails and
two antennae,I have seen stoneflys on the ice of lakes and
ice edge on the salmon river, when i see them i go to a
stonefly[fly]with out the front antennae,i have founded that
the way i fish the antennae makes the [fly] move wrong
not like the real bug
hope this helps

Now with all this talk about flies, I'm thinking about using a bead head pheasant tail nymph tommarrow to see how it does on the perch. I could try a stone fly nymph but i'm thinking that in the lakes there are smaller nymphs they are feeding on now, but everybody knows that nymphs are always in the water 365 days a year, so there is always a bait idea  when everything else fails. Talk later

I was in a bait shop today at Guffins Bay and he had some hand tied flies (Ice Flies) for sale. I dont recall how much they were. They were flashy with a lot of flash a boo and a glitter body and big white head with red eyes.
What I would try is a regular bead head nymph, like the pheasant, in maybe size 10.
You know that when the perch and crappie get really finicky, you are to switch to a smaller jig. I think when they really get hard to catch, switch to a fly.
What would really be nice is to get a visual on the perch and then send him the fly and see how he reacts. Can anybody help us out with this "Field Test"????

Ice Boy,
Can you record video with your Aqua view??? That must be cool as all get out. If you need some flies to test out, let me know, I make them myself. Been tying flies since I was 9 years old and started fly fishing. Talk later

Last year.I tried little flys for perch and they worked great. They were one after the other. The way I rigged them is I would put a Swedish pimple about a 8 inches below the fly. Also tie the fly directly to the line. ( If that doesn't work, then try and keep the fly about 2 inches away from the main line)  ;)

Hope this doesn't confuse You.

Get the smallest straight shank hook (dry fly) and use some lead thru the body. I like to wrap the shanks. I tie em in darker colors to resemble small aquatic life.
Always fish it above a jig and sometimes let the jig sit on the bottom and just work the fly.
Have also found white to be a color that juts does not produce?
