Disco Ball jigs
« on: Dec 06, 2011, 08:37 PM »
Does anybody know who has these tungsten disco ball jigs?  The ones without eyelits.  in-fisherman has done articles on them, just hard to find.

They are called Sharx jigs oversees.  They have been featured in In-Fisherman a couple of times.  THere is no eyelit, the line passes through a hole in the jig head.  The head is octogon shaped with the top half being a crystal.  It will always hang horazontal.  In-fisherman says HT will be importing them, can't find anything on thier website.  Just wondering if it will be another year that we hear about these, and can't find them.

Haven't seen the 'disco ball' jigs for sale...
BUT, sportsmens direct has some 'boogie ball' jigs that are similar.
They're tungsten, but don't have the crystal on them. Just a faceted metallic finish.
If you ever get hit with a bucket of fish, be sure to close your eyes. ;)

HT imports anything, all they do is copy it, reproduce/mass-produce it with cheaper labor and materials and zero quality control. Marmooskas by HT- truly sum off the worst craftmanship I have seen by a tackle maker.
When cleaning eyelets clear of paint(no paint cloggin my Fiskas!) prepare to lose 1 out of 3 jigs as they break. There is a reason why it looks like lil kids painted them, THEY DIDor to be more specific-lil chinese kids that should be out playing and learning not stuck in a factory.
I`m sure the "disco ball" jig that is winning tournaments in Europe now, will be no different. Was a disco ball, till HT gets ahold of it, then it`ll just be a ball of shhheeet.

I've been playing around with these. The beads are a tungsten component for fly tying.

Seems like a viable alternative-not afraid to make my own if the need arises. Probably more cost effective by far., too! Watta ya afix the tungsten ball to the hook with? Epoxy and a lil wrap of thread at the base? Thinkin a glow bead snugged up to ball would be nice also.

I haven't had much time to play lately but the plan is epoxy. If you really wanted to keep the weight vs. size ratio up you could even mix the epoxy with tungsten powder. We'll see... 25 beads are about $6.

There's also a tungsten shot for reloading shells that may have some promise for the DIY crowd. A little notch with the cut off disc on a Dremel and some epoxy...

All kinds of options when you roll your own.

Ty for the reply esox_xtm, appreciated. I`m gonna look for some at KitteryTrading Post next time I head up, along with appropriate wire hooks. $6 -25 balls+ $4 litewire hooks=$10/25 jigs @ 40cents a jig! compared to other tungsten jigs= SWEEeeeeeEETT!  ;D  looks like I`ll be rollin my own too!

Looks like the price has gone up since I bought 'em but here's where I found 'em:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bead-Heads-Tungsten-Faceted-Slotted-Gold-Fly-Tying-/250898339506?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item8011699bb3

Do a search for tungsten beads on eBay to see a whole range of offerings...

I have those faceted tungsten beads on my fly tying table.  Thought about trying to make the same and epoxy the crystal on, but there is a time justification,

I received mine from Warsaw Poland.  I have them in gold and silver.  I asked somebody I knew to pickup some tungsten jigs for me, and this was part of the lot.  They do look interesting but have never used it.  I got some odd shape items, and really, really tiny ones too.

Those aren't the Sharx, eyeless jigs.  The Sharx are very distinctive.

The ones they are talking about in in-fisherman are the jeweled marmooska from sharx, imported by HT. I've been trying to find some since I read the article, but everyone online is sold out

Well, un scientific, but the Disco Balls were amazing for Bluegills today.  Tipped with one spike, worked all day.  Sink fast for the size, looks like a size 14 hook.
