Title: Green Lake-Grand Traverse
Post by: Iceassin on Jan 12, 2018, 05:30 AM
Has anyone checked yet to see how the ice held up after the rain? Planning a trip up in about 3 weeks. Obviously a lot can change between now and then but...Thanks.

We follow "Buc's Northern Michigan  Fishing Report" on facebook.  He has a websit also. He usually posts a video report at a northern michigan lake everyday.  1/12 was at Green Lake he said it was good to go with about 8" of ice.  We needed the thaw up here this week to get rid of the snow on the lakes.

Went by Green Lake this morning.

There are permanent shanties on both The Karlin and Music Camp Sides.

Both sides are plowed and have parking.

The Music Camp Side requires a Michigan Recreational Passport.
Your licence plate renewal tag will have the letter "P" on it if you opted for the pass when you renewed your plate.
NOTE: The DNR does check and does give out tickets.

Time to get your Smelt on!  :icefish:

Lake trout fishing on Green Lake can be worthwhile.

The DNR has planted over 100,000  fingerling Lake Trout averaging about 6" in length over the last decade in Green.

Green is a type "B" inland trout lake. You are allowed 3 trout over 15" in length.

The size limit for lake trout on Green Lake is 15"

Lake Trout fishing is open year round on Green Lake.

See pages 37 and 48 of the Michigan Fishing Guide.

Good Luck all

Headed up the weekend of the 3rd. A little concerned about this last warm up and the one coming this weekend. Anyone have any current conditions and any future updates would be greatly appreciated.

With mc sporting goods and gander now both closed, where is everyone buying minnows near green lake and traverse city?  Will be up there next week.

Minnows are available at Havens Party Store on M-137 just north of Green lake, right in Interlochen.

I too think Havens Party Store is probably your best bet.

Depending on what way your coming in here are some more options:

Cherry land Grocery at 19114 Honor Hwy, Interlochen, MI 49643  231-275-7755

Long Lake Grocery  at  9374 N Long Lake Rd, Traverse City, MI 49685  phone 231-946-4249

Roy's General store at  963 E Hammond Rd, Traverse City, MI 49686   phone 231-947-6810

All of these places have minnows, plus a whole lot more.

Good luck All

If you are coming from the south Stapelton's on the top of the hill at 115 and 31 or Backcast in Benzonia, or Empire there is a place on 31 not sure of the name though.

Buc's Wholesale Bait is on 31....10035 US-31, Interlochen, MI 49643....they supply all the bait shops with minnows, they have minnow ponds out back where they raise them.  They have a honor system 24/7 bait cooler with minnows in bags in front of the store....I know they had some issues with thief's stealing everything in the cooler, so I hope it still exists....they have a security camera so be warned.

FOUND ON LONG LAKE:   Jig box, well organized.   Found it pretty much around the center on the lake.  PM me and describe it.  I shall return it.

Going to Green tomorrow (Sat) night...no reports anywhere on the smelt bite but they can't be any worse than poor Gull Lake (another thread/long story).  Going to test out my new green led "rope light"...8 feet of green glowing wonder!  ;D

Good luck, haven't heard  much from Green this season.  Didn't do much yesterday on the net or I would have made a couple suggestions.  I have been field testing a light I built a couple weeks ago, so far so good.  8ft, interesting, mine is about 2ft, how many luman does your new light produce?

So my brother and I went to Green Sat night (2/24/18)...windy and around 38deg, 9" of ice.  We managed 19 smelt total for the night, packed up just after 10pm when the rain started.  In years past we always had the graphs loaded with smelt to the point where you would lose your bait going down cause they were so thick.  Gone are those days....we literally were fishing single or double marks for them.  Was pretty tough so considering the lack of fish we didn't do that bad.  All the smelt we caught were very large....7 to 8" long and thick.  The 10 I got...8 were females loaded with eggs.  So if your looking for a bunch of smelt I would suggest Crystal or Higgins as Green looks to be going the same direction as Gull Lake.  Super bummed.

Crystal isn't much better on the numbers as I have found in 6 nights over 2 different trips of fishing there, unless something changed this week.  Most of the smelt I have caught have been female also if I had to guess I would say 85-90%.  Better than the guys down on Gull as they keep putting up the goose eggs down there but not what I was expecting after a couple years of little to no ice on Crystal thought the fishing would be much better this year.  Thanks for the report and ice conditions, headed that way Wednesday.
