We usually rip minnows in half and drop them in holes to get/keep the perch around, not sure if it is legal, but as long as it is legal bait I see no problem with what i am doing.

i've always wondered about this. heard using canned cat food as chum but never dared try it in fear of it being illegal.

There is a thread on here about all types things to use  chumming .. There is no law against it in NY State..  When they have the Carp Tourney  in Baldwinsville its an " epicurian art" in regards to the mixtures they come up with to attract them in ..

I've heard about the egg shells a few times but never think to actually do it. From what I understand it is not illegal unless you are throwing something in that can be considered littering. The cat food may be fine as long as you don't throw the whole can. There are guys that chum the Champlain canal with all sorts of wierd concotions in plastic mayo jars and just punch holes in it.

Use and possession of fish eggs

No person shall possess more than one quart total of fish eggs from trout, lake trout or Atlantic Salmon while on the waters of the state or the shores thereof. Fish eggs which are still inside the carcass of an intact, legally caught and possessed fish shall not be counted towards the one quart total.

No person shall take or attempt to take any fish by means of chumming with fish eggs. For the purposes of this section, chumming means depositing fish eggs, not attached to a hook, in the waters of the State of New York other than in the Marine and Coastal District

So no chumming with eggs guys, but I could not find anything about chuming in general so as long as its not eggs I think its good

Good info RedNeckKid. Thanks. I'm still curious though if we can use panfish eggs.
moshpitbull- I'm almost tempted to start a thread to see how many IS users have thrown it down in a circle pit. Horns up fellow metalhead.  8) Welcome to the shanty.

I think they mean ... no chumming with fish eggs whatsoever, panfish or otherwise (other than M+C waters).

Egg shells have always worked pretty well for us.  The dead minnows get cut up and put down the hole also, which on camera has shown the perch seem to like the little pieces of bait floating down.   We have also taken a large glass mayonaise jar (holes in the lid) and put a dozen minnows in it attached to a cord and put it down the hole to attrach fish, does seem to keep them around.  Pull the jar up and take with you when you're done.

You can't chum with ANY fish eggs ... trout or otherwise.  At least in fresh water, legally that is.
