Nelson Res.

Spent Wed. afternoon and all day Thur. fishing just off Pelican Island in the shallows. Few bites no fish. Had, what we figure was a good size Northern but got bit off. (just wasn't rigged for Northern) At the suggestion of another angler, We moved into deeper waters 30+ feet. Instantly was rewarded with a small Perch. We finally gave up at 6PM and headed in with 5 Perch and 2 Walleye. Seemed we just didn't hit the right location. We had reports of other fisherman "knocking-them-dead'", verified catches of Perch 40+. Had we been equipped with a quadrunner we could have covered a bigger area.
The weather was quite nice for a day of ice fishing, lots of ice angler activity. The ice, although showing signs (frost heaves) of degrading, is still 12 to 20 inches. I will try to make my way to Nelson maybe once more before the ice gets to "rotton" to venture out on. Fresno is much closer and should be a indicator of the ice conditions at Nelson, the season is warmer than normal so if you go check with locals first. Sleeping Buffalo lodge is right at the east edge and they can let you know what the fisherman have been saying about the ice conditions. At least they were helpful to us.
Good luck and be careful.
