How many setups?
« on: Dec 07, 2017, 05:15 PM »
Digging out hard water gear and was wondering if it's just me or does everyone have as many setups as I do. Not including tip-ups or jaw jackers, I have 10 rod/reel combos. Also running out of room in my Cabelas soft rod case. Any suggestions?

Oh, it's not just you.  Ten rod/reel setups (here we can use 5 each and I have a his/hers set), plus tip ups, plus plus.  And rod holders.  Ten fold-ups, 8-10 screw-ins, and an AK Salmonbear AK Fish Trap.

8 total combo's for me. 4 for her and 4 for me I want her to have the same quality and set ups I do. Although she does have a pink one I don't seem to ever "borrow" ;D

Well, I guess you could admit you have a problem, sell all your equipment, and deactivate your iceshanty account. Or, like Cooey22 said, buy another rod holder like the rest of us would  ;D

I just set up a larger soft side bag with 8 combos. To ensure rod safety I installed foam tubing for water lines to slide the rods into. Worst thing is I have others that will end up in another case. No yard sale for me, 2010 Chevrolet crewcab that seats one.

Sometimes I'll take people out who don't fish often so I have a lotta gear...20 plus rod setups, 14 or so reels and another 30 tip ups (20 or so beaver dams cuz I like to refurb em).  Couple of jackers too.  I normally only drag out (if alone) 4 different rod setups for the species and fishery I'm on that day.  95% are either trout, pans or macs.  I like to have them strung up in advance with the different jigs, spoons, raps etc that should work that day for that fishery.  You can move quicker and prospect faster than if you have to keep switching rigs.  Once I'm on fish I'll retie one or two of the non producers to try and dial it in even further.  Playing with sizes, colors, plastics, bait etc.

You can never have too many setups
I have lost track of the rods/reel combos I have and the number of tip ups
But every year something catches my eye and i need a new setup

I don't have as many as you YET but give me a few more years and I most definitely will ;D. I have about 6-7 real setups with 10+ Ice Blue rods with Schooley's De-Ma for the friends. I have 60+ more setups rods for bass, trout, ocean, travel, surf etc.  :-\ I know, its a problem.

On ice I bring 4 or 5. Thats all I feel I need.  rarely use more than 2 or 3 in a day. Only allowed 2 setups in Colorado anyway. :P

Guess I need to step up my game, I only have 7 tip ups and 7 rods. But I guess thats acceptable since I just started ice fishing a few years ago and we are only allowed to use 5 tip ups at a time. I'll be buying some more soon for when the kids start going along. Now don't get me started on my summer fishing stuff especially my bass rigs... let's just say the wife thinks its excessive and she owns a lot of shoes and purses lol!  ;D

If only baitcaster reels weren't so expensive for the good performing ones, I would own more.  Then again there aren't any baitcasting rod set up that get's into the ML or L power so I have to go custom-made that way.

So I have been transitioning for years switching over my spinning set ups to baitcasting set ups, plus I have a few fly UL reels too.  I know what I want in a custom rod now and it's a hefty price tag.

To answer the question: I've lost count after 10 set ups.  I typically only bring out 3-6 combo's for what I'm fishing.  I mostly use a three combo system trying to figure out the pattern.  As one rod is typically a deadstick set up and the other two are jigging with different lures.  I am legally allowed two lures under the ice, so one is deadstick and other is jigging.

I have 2 setups, one for panfish and one for lakers. And that is only until I break one or both of them.
Quote- fishslap: I use a variety:  whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser

8 jigging rods and unlimited tip ups. I make my own so I have about 5 sets in different colors that I use yearly. 1 set is made from a cherry board that I had used as a seating placement card holder for my wedding. I have sold a good amount as well so its pretty cool to see them out on the ice randomly.

Here is the Cherry board I used.

Just add water.

Those heritage or Indian hill knock offs when you store them release the flags or the springs won't last.
Only time mine are set is when they're used for fishing.

Too many and sometimes not enough of the correct ones. I probably have 25 setups. And 20 tipups.

I fish mostly for panfish, so I carry 4 or 5. I have a total of seven, but can't see taking all of them with me.

So I went to count some of my rods.  I just found out that I have forgotten that I own two of the St Croix Premier 42" M spinning rods.
