perch for bait?legal?
« on: Mar 03, 2011, 06:38 PM »
If i catch a tiny dink can i hook him on my tip up and be legal? My son wanted to last week but i didn't know if it was legal so i said to let it go home.I know in some states game fish are illegal to use for bait.Is perch considered a "game"fish?

How about sunfish.I know they were not legal to use for bait in florida. But it's a whole different game up here though.
I tried to search the dec website and didn't find anything.

Caught my biggest largemouth as a kid on a sunfish. ;D

Any legally caught fish(except Carp, goldfish, lamprey larvae and round goby) can be used as bait in NY, they must count towards your daily limit and they can't be transported over land.

Quote
Baitfish or other legally taken fish species intended to be used as bait taken may only be used in the same water body from which they were caught for bait in hook-and-line fishing. Transportation of personally harvested baitfish overland by a motorized vehicle is prohibited (see exceptions for smelt, suckers, alewives and blueback herring taken for human consumption).

To simplify the law that JJ posted: Use them where you catch them, and don't transport them in you truck.

Thanks....didn't know you could do that.  Would make for a cheap day of pike fishing on Sandy I bet.  Sure I could catch enough dinks to bait my traps up there.

I used to do it yrs ago, not much anymore.  Bring scissors, cut 1/3 of the dorsal fin and spikes off.  The  perch then looks less menacing, & clipping fins cause them to swim erratically & trigger the desired response from Predators.

thought i had a monster on last year. The flag was spooling as fast as it could. I thought i set the hook and starting pulling the line out of the hole. Felt heavy till i got it right near the hole. Then it felt like nothing. Pulled out a 11" perch with teeth marks down its back. This was during a tournement. Thought i had a winner.

Interesting. Might try a 12" bass caught in Conesus to catch one of those 25# Pike in there.....

After filleting a perch I have taken the rib cage and used it as bait on a tip up for Lake Trout. Just lay it on the bottom and the LT will pick it up and run with it.

when i have a problem with perch flags i usually move my bait higher of the bottom. This will usually keep the small perch off my bait and the pike still see it because their eyes are facing upward. hope this helps.eyehi
