Huge Sturgeon (Pic)
« on: Feb 19, 2010, 05:17 PM »
Co worker of mine emailed this to me;  not sure of authenticity ect. ect.  but thought guys would enjoy seeing it...

LAKE ERIE STURGEON

For those who don't know-- Wheatley is about 30 miles from Harrow on Lake Erie .
NO COMPUTER TRICK PHOTO HERE!!!!!!!    THIS IS  ONTARIO !

FYI:  This Sturgeon is still alive, worn out from the fight.   They turned him loose after the photo.

TWO CREEKS CONSERVATION AREA,   Wheatley , ON (at Lake Erie ) 11/19/2007

It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1'. It was  56' around the girth; and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns reeling it in.....

Any Sturgeon  OVER  five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water.
They are brood/breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

Don,

I believe that is a real picture...but the location is not Lake Erie but somewhere in the Pacific NW - probably the Columbia River.   That appears to be a white sturgeon not a lake sturgeon.  Lake sturgeon do not grow to that size.

I have a feeling that those primitive fish will be gone someday soon. They should be protected. I just don't want to swim where they are! :o

Yeah, I have heard jail time for touching one, let alone pulling out of the water.

I have caught 4 short nose sturgeon while striper fishing  in the Hudson over the last few years. They where only 3 to 4 feet long . The short nose sturgeon don't get much bigger than that.

so these guys are out fishing for it on purpose? i mean a fish like that could be 50-100 years old and they play it for 6 hours and it takes 4 different guys, if you have to hand off the rod, cut the line, the fish beat you, i just think its unfair to have a host of people reeling in a fish. they are amazing though, and i hope they can survive
