How far is Fremont Lake from cheyenne sounds like there are alot of lakers in there, and still looks to have tons of ice still?

The mack that won the fishing derby is a sure enough a good one, but the smile on my 7 year old grandson Jacobs face when he won a hundred bucks for a little mack on Sunday was tops.  Then they gave him a brand new 10 inch  jiffy auger for the smallest fish entered in the derby and the smile really got big, heck he won`t even sell it to me for 400 bucks (I did offer).

I hope that he remembers this all of his life and that the auger is the only one that he ever has to own.  I know that he will fish for the rest of his life.

Bottom dweller, I am heading down to Jackson Hole to visit my sister on April 5...what are the chances that the ice will still be good?
Is there still fishing there?   (We still have 30 inches of ice, BTW).

Fremont Lake is a long ways. I think it takes about 5 or 6 hours from Cheyenne. The fishing is slow, for me anyways. When there is 350 people fishing it at the same time, somebodys bound to catch something. Ice should be good for the rest of the month, maybe longer depending on the weather. Good Luck.

Congrats to your grandson Bigred! You have created another iceaholic!

I almost won one of the augers, I guessed 21.6lbs for the winning fish contest, but somebody else had me beat with the tiebreaker length. O-well, I don't want to have to change my name from Spudbar to ice auger?

Spudbar, the fellow that won the auger for weight and length is an old Flaming Gorge laker specialist.  He and his wife (who won the grand on sunday) have probably caught  a few big ones out of Fremont since moving to Pinedale.

Your right about that lake being slow.  In fact slow would be an over statement most fishing days on Fremont.  I tell people not to waste their time, but to hit Half moon or Boulder instead.

You are right about the iceaholic and the grandson.  Both of my grandsons (and soon my to young granddaughters) are getting broke in proper. I take them when ever they will or can go.

I think that fishing is about catching fish until I take a kid then it`s about teaching life, fun and stewardship.

I hope we have good ice on Half Moon and Fremont still.  It was not even freezing this morning 34 degrees and the day was 58.  There should still be good ice but we are losing it quickly.  I'm going out Thursday or Friday and will post what I find.

Sounds like some good fishing, were you postholing pretty badly to get in there?

I fished Halfmoon on Tuesday afternoon.  I skiied down to the outlet and landed a mess of rainbows, most 10-12", a few around 16".  The lake still has plenty of ice, but there is quite a bit of standing water in spots, and some real green/dark looking ice.  Unless we start getting some cold nights I am not going to be feeling comfortable out there for much longer.

Wow! Very nice catch first time or not! Those lakers make my crappie pile seem like... well... crappie!  :D

May have to take a day or two off next year and head up into the hills and track me some of the lakers I've seen at IS lately. Since returning to fishing, there just seems too many places I want to go and fish. Kid in a candy store syndrome... :::sigh:::

P.S. Lakers good eatin'?

Without question: Robert Ray in Daniel.

He does skin mounts.  We have 2 lakers he did at my house, and I know a bunch of people around Pinedale that have his mounts.  They are the best I have seen, really beautiful almost all the natural colors, with very little paint.  The newer fish at Faler's are his.  Next time you are down there check out the fish behind the back counter (sporting goods).

If you do give one to him be prepared to wait for a long time however, he is much in demand!

On a side note, if you do catch one you want mounted, DO NOT expose it to sunlight.  Cover it and get it in the freezer as soon as possible to preserve the natural colors.

I only found out about Robery Ray last spring and am having him do a 10 lb brown for me. I still have not heard from him and he did tell me that it would be about 1 year's wait when i took the fish into him. I have seen many lake trout mounts and caught a few i should have mounted but i do indeed think that he does an outstanding job. I have not been able to hit the ice much this year so i will have to wait to catch my 40lber (that i will mount) outa the boat. I would also love to go fish boulder, halfmoon, fremont, willow or new fork before the ice gets unsafe so i only have a little while to get me stuff together and go out hopefully on Sunday.
