Pre-storm fishing
« on: Mar 15, 2007, 07:02 PM »
I always thought it wasn't very good before a front moves in, but some say otherwise. What have you experienced???

I've usually done well, especially on game fish.  I'm guessing that the ice surface will be a lot sloppier after the storm. If you can go tomorrow, get out there

I have caught more salmon just before or at the first of a storm than any other time. I think they know and want to fill up before the storm gets too intense. Maybe it's like everything in the wild and lays low during the storm. I think it has to do with the low presure.

Dadstacklebox, his son travis, myself and a few of my friends went out tonight.  Slow but did manage to ice about 10 fish..I thought it would be better between these two low pressure systems

Fishing before a storm has always been good for me.  If I see a front coming in near a full moon, I'm thinking Yahtzee!

Couldn't agree more with Jim C. and some of the others - today is a "green light" day for those who can make it out.  Tommorrow will be completely dead (gamefish)

I am thinking the same thing. I have some comp time to take off and took all the gear to work with me, so lets see, should I go or should I stay.

I also have good luck at Mousum Lake on days like this, but from Portland thats a haul at noon time.

Best place to fish before a good snow storm???????

Fishnfool - well you guys proved me wrong last time so do it again ;)  I will say that the biggest brown trout and the biggest splake I have ever caught were on days just like they are projecting for tomorrow.  Barometer will be super low which generally spells slow but I doubt you'd mind slow if it included a 15 pound togue and a 6 pound salmon!  Good luck, gonna be one heck of a ride for sure.... atleast your sleds will be protected, right.... I mean, BlueFin didn't steal your deal away from you did he? ;D

I usually have really good luck just prior to a snow storm and during the early stages of it.  If I had my pick of weather to go icefishing in, it's the beginning stages of a light storm.

Exactly.  Enough snow when I get back to the truck at the end of the day to brush it off, but not so much into the storm that I have to shovel it out.

nope...I wouldn't mind slow if it meant that!!... :o    and yeah....sled will be clean when we get there. ;D

Another bonus about that new trailer is, along with the machines, I can slide my portable and other gear right in there too...

fyi...I found this link today with a fishing conditions grid.....kinda neat.

Well, the jury's still out on this one. I went today from 7-2, got 2 little pike and lost 1 at the hole. A couple wind flags just to keep the blood warm...lol
Will have to try the next storm.
Ice was in great shape, all the slush from Wed. had frozen, only fell twice.  ::)

For the record....sucker - Dead or Alive - 0
