Title: New York gathering ?
Post by: mr.clean on Oct 10, 2008, 03:33 PM
Greetings I last posted on this subject on Sept.25 under the title Mint Mr. Creosote and no one has responded since that date. So I'm starting this thread if ANYONE is interested in a mass gathering of NY> Ice Shanty members please respond. This gathering could be a ice fishing trip or post season banquet ( LIKE Maine forum members) . When responding please mention a lake or lakes for icefishing trip or location for banquet. AS lakes can have the same name please also give location (county-town).
I'm in the process of planing a winter icefishing trip so please do not wait to long to respond, if you are like me you need time to make lodging reservations and put in for time off  from work.
  Looking forward to your replies.

Oneida lake would be in the middle of the state for the most part.  I have never fished Oneida and would love to.  It would make it even better to fish it and meet some new people from this site.

Oneida or Sandy Pond would be sweet for me.

Gambell, NYiceman,
Thanks for the quick respone I have heard of Oneida will have to see how long of a drive it is from my location in southeast NY. A couple things to keep in mind is amount of parking space ,public access sites ,lodging (Efficiencies- kitchenettes available -to clean our respective catches) and lake size . I and others do not own ATV or snowmobile , so it is fish near access site or be prepared to do a lot of walking (equipment- tackle hauling ). One more thing bait shops in the area.
We have  made a start so fellow members if interested please respond.

i'm in. we had thought about a gathering late last season. i don't have a machine either, so the location needs to be accessable to foot traffic.

To all who have replied so far we are looking at one large body of water. (22 miles long 5 miles across at widest point ) I will have to research what state access points exist or lodging that has lake access. Also will check the bait shop list once I see what towns- villages are near Oneida Lake .
I have a couple questions for those who've responded 1. Does it have to be Oneida lake (true it is located around the center of the state) 2. What date is best for the majority of us ? ( presidents weekend would work best for me . SAT FEB.14-Mon. Feb. 16 )
Pooley you and I are looking at a four hour plus ride to reach the eastern shore of Oneida Lake.

well, the king is also good. i think we have more guy's willing on the east side, plus more new englanders will show. we also have a bunch of penn. guys, so they would like oneida, or something. i think lake george is good, but oneida works too.

Last year we had a derby on Feb 23. I will try and find some past info and post it. Here is some info.

How about north shore, constantia, it's near a lot of stores and restaurants, and plenty    access/parking, and best structure within 1/2 to 3 miles from launch point. If we get over 50   guys, we could all hit the local pub after to give everyone their goodies as well. Any other suggestions please list them, no cash involved please.
Food?  Drinks? What do you think?

Here is a link to the one held here last year. You can go through the postings, I am sure it will help if you plan on coming to Oneida.

This thread will be updated at least every day 1 time, my message box will be emptied daily if anyone needs anything as well. Please post suggestions and or ideas to make this a great day.

Just wanted to see how many could make it to a Oneida lake get together + see how many are interested.
There are good benefits here, we have a bait shop, 3 diners, a good bar, pizza shop that delivers to access point, plenty of parking for the most part. Close lodging nearby if anyone wants to make a weekend of it. 'll get a pot of venison stew/bread to start a potluck lunch for everyone.

Also if you like we could have a contest for biggest perch or something, everybody donate a prize (up to $10 in value/no cash/ ex.- beer, pole, line, jigs, whatever). Winner takes all for biggest perch/walleye. If we get a load of folks like 10+ we can spread the goodies around. Maybe some goodies 4 the kids as suggested.

Also somebody made a suggestion that we pass the hat for the West Monroe fire department, they are the only department in our area with an airboat for ice rescue. They are the ones that got that guys body out of Sodus bay last year, I'm sure they would appreciate it. I am also sure anyone who has been "rescued" off Oneida in the last couple years can attest this is an invaluable service. I would prefer checks or money orders made out to The West Monroe fire Department over having a ton of cash on me, maybe we should appoint someone to take the donations from the mod team. Chennbasshead is planning to come, maybe we can put him to work on that for the day.

Thats like 50+ ( before guests) already after 7 days with this thread, even if only half show that would be a great showing.

Looking at the end of January, no firm plans till the ice is in really good shape for machines and whatnot. That way we can get people out to fish, and not go on sketchy or real slushy ice. I think it should be on a Saturday or Sunday, any suggestions would be great. Also if people are making a long haul and want to fish the day before and after, i'm sure people will be around to fish with.

Reading some post people are suggesting south shore and north shore (constantia) for the get together.

Here are my thoughts On Constantia.

Parking- The point of access is at the break wall by the library, there is enough room on this road to accommodate at least 25 vehicles. We also may be able to use the library lot as it is closed for the winter(maybe 10 vehicles w trailers). There is also parking across the road that can handle about 10 vehicles with trailers that is owned by Lance Vella and i'm sure we could park vehicles there. Also we could contact the Consatntia fire dept. as their back parking lot is usually plowed, or Vella's store is a possibility as well. Also at the Cove restaurant we could put about 8-10 vehicles as I can talk to Mike the owner there as well(maybe get breakfast there for your crew would be a ++). We could maybe arrange that people with quads or sleds use the parking lots not right by the lake, but easily within 400 yards from any of these spots(ie> the store, fire department lot, or across the street). We will have the normal 10-20 cars that are going to be guys that are just fishing as well, not part of the IS crew.

Also if you want to go from william's park + you have a vehicle, you could just meet on the ice or afterwards at the bar. But you would have to donate your prizes before you started fishing to get into the prize pool. Maybe catch me the day before or on the ice that day.

There are also 3 restaurants in the area for breakfast and lunch if anyone is interested. Then descend on the local bar, the place will be pre-warned to 100 guys showing up at least. This would be a great spot to do the collection for the West Monroe fire department as well as giving away the goodies for the biggest perch + walleye.

I will definitely need some help from some of you for coordination for this event, it looks like a great showing already. If everyone brings 1 or 2 with them it will be a huge shindig for sure.

Good evening I just spent the last Few hours reading through the thread Tracker 1 mentioned , they had a hundred people interrested only twelve showed up to fish.
One problem they had which will be true with any large lake is the length of time it takes for safe ice to cover the majority of the lakes surface . This would hold true with Lake George (the king ) also . It appears Oneida Lake is popular with snowmobiles (races, etc. ) ,this may present problems finding parking not to mention having to mark your tipups -holes for safety .
This thread has had a 180 views so far ,but only seven replies not counting mine . I would like to have a location and date set by mid November (15) if possible. This hopefully will give those of us traveling time to find lodging and request time off from work. I will try to check this thread daily if anyone lives near Oneida feel free to (pm) me with info. on lodging- lake access -bait shops-etc.
For those who will be traveling a distance I have found two websites that may be of use to you.

     www.oneidalake.com   (map outline of lake)

Just to update what has been already posted I did some more web surfing on the Oneida lake site it appears there are five parks around the lake (one is a state park Verona Beach on the eastern shore ) so we should have lake access and parking .
I sent Tracker 1 a pm this morning to get information, he replied that Oneida generally has safe ice from mid January to St.Pat's day . He is also attempting to contact Cny panfisher (he organized a gathering on Oneida last February 23 ) so we can pick his brain for ideas and information.
Also sent a pm to NY., moderator Chen Bass Head he supposedly helped Cny panfisher last year still waiting for a reply.
One question for all of you if we go with presidents weekend should we aim for Saturday Feb.14 as the gathering date and use Sun.Feb.15 as a snow date. This is my first time trying to organize some thing of this type so please feel free to suggest things. If I get more replies to this thread I will see how to post a poll if more the the two lakes already mentioned or another date is suggested.

Depending on the day of the week, I am interested.  Sundays are best for me and my fishing buddy.
Never been on Onieda Lake before and would think that doing it while it's "hard" would be the best time.
I am only about 2 hours away from Constantia.  Been there several times picking up walleye fry for our rearing pond and stocking of Black Lake.

Hey guys, great to see interest in a second get-together. If parking is the biggest issue, we had no problems last year :). There is pretty good parking here on Oneida, and there are many access points. The problem was for the most part , people wanted to fish their "end" of the lake. If you plan for Oneida, middle to late February is good, there is enough ice usually for machines and whatnot. Good walking access as well, but to some it may be a long walk. Maybe make arrangements for the walkers to hitch rides that day, if everyone makes 2 trips, we shouldn't have too many problems.

Sandy pond is a great spot too, with lots of perch action, and last year there was a bunch of pig walleyes taken there. I don't know how the walleyes will be after they killed a bunch, with that bad dose of lampricide that our Canadian friends brought us last spring. Sandy is excellent for walkers as well, and the food at The Wigwam is gadam great. He also takes your parking fee off your bill, it's a great deal. I think Sandy Pond has an ice boat, so if we get some change together, they would really appreciate your donation if any come.

Greetings,
I am slowly making progress on plans for the gathering , as you can see Cnypanfisher has posted a reply, i sent him a pm asking for his help and I am now waiting for his reply.
Tracker 1 sent me two pm's this morning listing lodging locations and one place to purchase bait. (fat heads -type of minnow-shinner ) I will list them below.
 1. Kirch's Three Pines marina - Ryan Kirch  manager

4. ABC cottages - One room rented out in main house in the winter   1-315-675-3662     Also sell previously mentioned bait- fatheads

I forgot to mention three pines has three cottages that accommodate at least eight people (bunk beds in bed rooms ) may be good if coming with a group of people

                                   Access points -parks

1. Oneida shores Brewerton,NY west end of lake  hours sunrise-sunset  mid Oct.- March

ABC cottages only has 1 heated unit in the winter, so it won't last long if anyone wants it when things firm up. They do not have any bait in the winter at ABC cottages, I just bought the last 100 fatheads he will have until springtime.  ;D ;D

There will also be bait on north shore at Not Just Bait in Constantia, Eddie took great care of us last year, and he donated 1/2 the prizes.

Rooms are very limited at Wander inn as well, first come first served I guess.

I also think that the moderators here should give us a permanent link a the the top of the ny general page again this year, that helped visibility a lot. Maybe give somebody in charge of it 1 public thread, and a locked thread for updates that are not full of posts. RGFIXIT was very helpful with this last year, very great guy for helping out.

Maybe do a page with Dates/snow date for following day in case of bad weather, parking areas, meeting place, ideas that come up from members and whatnot.

Then a page with places to stay, things of that nature.

Maybe if we start early we will get 25 this year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cny panfisher,
thanks for the update-info. I was going by info. given to me by Tracker 1 in a pm (check your message box ) . Is it possible for you to tell me and others the counties Oneida lake is in then we could look for county websites for info. on the area or even a list of towns- villages around the lake . Also Tracker 1 mentioned Goodfrey Point as an access spot where abouts is it and how is the parking (plowed lot room for trucks -trailers with ATVs -snowmobiles .
Also for all who have expressed interest I posted an announcement about the gathering on My Fish Finder.com in the NY. forum.

Last year we tried for the middle of the month, but we had to push it towards the end of the month due to poor ice conditions. Ice conditions can best be found on these boards as well, so any date would be tentative at best.

Counties surrounding Oneida lake are, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego. Owsego county has a tourism site oswegocounty.com, it has fishing conditions there. I find the ice conditions and reports 100% better on this site, especially after you meet other people for private messaging.

Also if we fish Oneida it is probably best to keep the fish categories down to just walleye and perch, there are not a lot of northern fisherman, and you get mostly pickerals for the most part.

If we fish Sandy pond, Northern, walleye, and perch are all there. It might be hard to judge the largest perch, as they only get to 12 " or so, and we might need a micrometer to measure largest one.

we have some time to firm up where. last year, i had suggested 2 or more gatherings, rather than one. my idea was we would get better turnouts closer to home. that can also be done anyway, and we can tell more people about the statewide gathering.
Title: Re: New York gathering ?

Leon L. thanks for your interest and vehicle offer, Pooley I appreciate the words of encouragement could you pm Jimmy Claude since your friends he is the one who inspired this idea for the gathering . I am assuming he is out pursuing Bambi and relatives , he is usually a regular poster .
Let me explain my thinking I picked Presidents weekend because it's a national holiday (three day weekend ) so more members should be able to the gathering .I propose the following format below for the gathering.
     1. Feb.14 day of ice fishing on Oneida or other lake / meet after fishing at agreed upon bar/grill to socialize and distribute prizes.
2 .Feb 15  snow date if weather is to nasty to fish or get to lake on Feb.14 also members making a weekend out of the gather could meet up and fishtogether a second day if weather allows us to fish on Feb.14
      3. Feb. 16 leave for our respective homes- if you live close enough to the chosen lake maybe you could fish a few hours in the morning.

This is my idea for the prizes 1 .bigest overall fish by length/weight if tie 2. bigest walleye , yellow perch  or what ever species of fish is predominant in chosen lake.3. if there are a lot of children coming also youth prizes (12 under sound good ?)

We follow Cnypanfishers suggestion Every member who wants in on prizes must bring a prize ($10-$15/dollar value) $5 dollar value for kids. your entry must be measured/weighted at predetermined location by set time . Also ask if you will please make donation to local fire /emergency service ($5-10 )dollars check or money order made out to service ,I do not want to be responsible or carrying a lot of cash.
If this sound good or changes should be made post a reply or pm me.

Good afternoon, Pooley for all we know your suggestion of two or more regional gatherings might happen ,it appears though that most areas of NY. state do not have safe ice until mid.-late January. (depending on lake size -depth, elevation ,etc.) Anyone who works in a profession which requires weekend hours is propably limited in time they can take off from their job. (I'm a custodian for Shop Rite supermarkets ) But we shall see what happens mainly I just would like to see a gathering ,during ice fishing season or maybe a banquet ,picnic or other type of social event.
Bart posted an announcement with hyperlink about my trying to organize a gathering on MyHuntingForum.com (sister site) . He is known as Monk over there it has had fifty views to date. Also I posted a similar notice on MyFishFinder.com over a hundred views so far word of this possible event is getting out so we will see what interest it generates. I realize many members are hunters and that is where their focus is right now.
Below is a list of bait shops in the Oneida lake area taken from the baitshop list (new York news and info. on NY.forum main page )
      1. Mickey's Bait-Tackle
          715 south bay
          North Syracuse        315-458-7998

      2.  Gander Mountain
           5864 Carmencia road
            Cicero     near intrastate 81       315-698-1100

3,. Not just Bait    near state (?) hatchery
             Constantia

      4. South Shore Sportsmen shop
          Lakeport                           315-633-0630

The following are towns -villages in the Oneida lake area may help you in search for lodging if you need it.
Central Square- north of western end of lake by int.81
Brewerton -west end of lake by int.81
Cicero -south of west of lake by int.81

South shore of lake going west to east
    Bridgeport
    Lakeport
    Messenger Bay
    South Bay
  East shore of lake
    Oneida Valley
    Verona Beach
    Slyvan Beach
    North shore of lake
    North Bay
    Jewell
    Bernhard's Bay
    Constantia

The bait shop in Cleveland has bait usually in the prime time of ice fishing as well, located right near the state docks. If people fish Godfrey point, they should have wheels unless they are very strong walkers, the first bar is about 1 mile out. Parking in Bernhards bay is good at Taft Bay park, lots of room for vehicles. Constantia is OK for walkers, but the better spots are about 1 mile out, walleyes are very good in February, the perch really don't pick up till later, I mean you get some, but not schooled up very good yet. It seems shallow spot near weed beds do well, William's park(south shore) good access for perch early ice.

I am for smaller gatherings as well, Sandy Pond would be a great spot for one, lots of people from that area forum here as well. Perch, panfish, and northern fishing is all great here, walleye was good last year, but this year might be different. Since they opened up the channel to the lake, fishing here has improved dramatically.

Good day fellow New Yorkers,
I have sent personal messages to the following members who responded to the thread Mint? Mr.Creosote ( Jimmy Claude,Troutguy1377,Bucketbass,Oletimer and yo1157).
So far including myself there are twelve members interested in a gathering of some sort or other. The lakes and idea listed below have been proposed
1.state wide mass gathering at Oneida lake
     2. state wide mass gathering at sandy pond
    3. state wide mass gathering at lake George
    4. smaller(regional gatherings) suggested by Pooley and Cnypanfisher
The regional gathering may work better less distance and driving time ,not to mention dealing with winter weather. If we go this route maybe we could have a mass banquet or picnic in the late spring. when driving conditions should be better.
I posted previously that I would like to have a location and date set by Nov.15,thinking we should wait to Dec.1 . After that date if multiple lakes or times for event are proposed I will see how to post a poll ,to determine lake and date.
I am going to call my friend latter today and tell him about this please feel free to do the same, he is not an I.S. member (anyone have a problem with that? ) . This is one way we can increase membership. Also going to pick a date and make reservations for the Adirondack trip mentioned in opening post of this thread, I want to have a back up plan in case a gathering of some type does not occur. I can always cancel the reservation if I know the gathering is good to go as they say.
I closing this post an noncements of the planed gather are on both the NY. forums of My fishfinder (MFF) and My hunting Forum (MHF) about 170 views between those two sites.

I will do some internet surfing in the next few days try to find websites for Madison and Oswego counties. also going to see if my local Gander Mountain carries lake maps of Oneida lake or  sportsman's connection book for western NY.
If any one can give me and others some information on Sandy pond it would be appreciated I been told it is located near Pulaski, NY.

Hole Hawg,
Thank you for the post Sandy pond is one of three lakes suggested to hold a mass (state wide ) gathering of New York Ice Shanty members . The other to lakes suggested are Oneida Lake (Syracuse- Utica- Rome ,NY. ) and Lake George. I am currently waiting for member responses after Dec. 1,2008 a poll will be posted to determine the lake and possibly date for the gathering. So far the majority of members replying are alright with the gathering being held on Oneida Lake, the date of Feb.14,2009 -snow date Feb.15,2009. this is the Saturday and Sunday of Presidents holiday weekend. Go to page two of this thread for more details.
One question for you or any one else am I right that Sandy Pond is Located in the Pulaski,NY. area .I can not find it on the NY. state road map I own ,hope to get out to Gander Mountain or other sporting goods store by me this weekend and purchase Sportsmans connection book for western NY. state.
If you or others can post or pm me some more info. it would be greatly appreciated. This event is open to members in surrounding states and Canada ,if you are willing to make the drive.     Steve

pulaski is a long run for the southern guys, so that is why i was saying regional get togethers. lake george is a long run for western people. oneida is ok, but we need to vote, or something. the weather could kill the gathering, so it needs some tweaking. how flexible is everyone? i will start athread for the south.

Hole Hawg,
Thank you for the information I believe you meant to say Interstate 81 instead of Int.84 , I found Sandy Creek,NY. on my road map .
I have a favor to ask of any members who live in the Oneida Lake Area could you please check to see if Syracuse Univ. ,Turning Stone Casino and Onondaga county coliseum have events scheduled for Feb.14-15 .This could make finding lodging difficult for people like me who will be traveling a distance, thank you .
Also one question for those members who have responded to this thread, I originally stated that a poll would be posted around Nov.15 to determine the lake and date of Gathering. I revised this to a poll after Dec.1 this thread has had a little over 900 hundred views and only twenty some odd replies . So should I wait or see how to post a poll already or since the majority of replies are alright with Oneida Lake and Sat. Feb. 14 Just say this will be the location and date of a state wide gathering of NY. Ice Shanty members.
I guess it is really two questions ,looking forward to your respones.

I would like to be in.  I haven't fished Onieda since I was a kid.  That was the first place my father tried to off me.....good times...good times.  Onieda has good access and lots of little mom and pop hotels around.  look up the local chamber of commerce.  The locals cater to ice fisherman so you will be able to piece together any last min stuff.  It freezes up in good time.  It is accessable from anywhere in the state without the use of extensive directions.  We are probably only going to get 30 people at best.  Plus guests.  A vote in December might hamper resevations but the later the vote the better count you will get.  Hard to plan out too far.

To all who have responded to my last post (eve.Oct.26) thank you. I realize trying to plan an outdoor winter event in a state of New York's size is not going to be easy,My concern with Oneida Lake is its location to some major attractions Syracuse university (athletic events ) Turning Stone Casino and Onondaga county war memorial (Major name entertainer (s) preforming at the last two mentioned) could -will draw large numbers of people to the area taking up a good amount of lodging .
Gambell the first to respond to this thread suggested Oneida Lake for its central location in the state .(It is propably a two hour drive from his home just west of Rochester up near Lake Ontario ). Raquette Dacker Otesgo Lake may be located to far east for some members in the western part of the state . Fish King567 the same holds true with Lake Pleasant. (my humble opion only)
If this becomes a yearly event we could -can move its' location around the state to give as many members as possible a chance to attend , Tracker 1 also mentioned this to me in a personal message.
Also as all of you may have seen notice of annual tournaments, derby's contests are being posted in the NY. forum and in the Ice fishing events forum. Ice shanty members could arrange to meet at any one of these events. You may have noticed that member Pooley is trying to organize a gathering of southeast NY. members.
Unless I get many replies suggesting otherwise I plan on waiting till Dec.1 to have a poll posted to determine final location and date . I agree the later date for the poll will allow for more members to respond.

Thanks for letting me vent some of my feelings .       Steve

The idea of multiple gatherings on the same day can be an option in the poll. It would make things easier but we would need volunteers to over see each gathering. I'm assuming Pooley is willing to take that task for Southeast,NY. since he is trying to get a gathering of Southeast area members together.
Also maybe we could have a picnic for state members in the spring-summer when traveling conditions should be better.

Daprod,
I have added your name to the list I'm keeping as a possible , just in case you or others have not read the whole thread at this time the gathering location /date are up for debate . We may also go with several regional gatherings. Around Dec.1,2008 a poll will be posted to determine the location /date of a mass gathering or if there will be regional gatherings.
To all of you who reside in Southeastern NY. please see a thread by Pooley (Southeast gathering/ NY.gathering ) he is trying to organize a get to gether of area members .

Good evening it was brought to my attention on My Fish Finder (MFF) that Saturday Feb.14,2009 is Valentine's day. So please keep that in mind when you respond to the poll that will be posted around Dec.1,2008. For those of you who have not read through this whole thread the poll will determine location/date of state wide gathering or if there will be several regional gatherings. So far there is one Volunteer to host a regional gathering (Pooley) in Southeastern part of the state.(See his Separate thread Southeast gathering/NY.gathering.
I do not want to hear that anyone is living out of their shanty because of attending whatever type of event we hold .

Hey guys, just moved to new york a month ago so I'm new to this part of the forum.  What about Meacham lake in the Adirondacks, should be able to get some early fishing there as it is gonna be cold.  Good parking, close to Saranac Lake/Lake Placid.  Good fishing - perch, pike, lls...  I'll be out there most of the season, as soon as I get my shanty built.. :)
Title: Re: New York gathering ?
Post by: mr.clean on Nov 19, 2008, 09:37 AM
Bdub,
I am not to familiar with the Adirondacks, but since you are a new state resident just wanted to inform you check that New York state only allows ice fishing on certain bodies of water that contain trout. So I do not know if Meachem lake is open to ice fishing. You can check with the regional Dept.of Environmental Conservation office in Ray Brook,NY. Just for your and others info. Lake Colby off of route (I think ) between Saranac Lake and Paul Smith is open to ice fishing.
Please check this thread form time to time and also watch for the poll to determine location/date of state wide gathering or if there will be several regional gatherings.

Greetings every one I hope you are all having a good Thanksgiving. My family and I will celebrate ours tomorrow (work in retail /super market ) . I put in five hours today at least my employer is not like Gander Mountain (open 3-9 pm ) today.
Tomorrow evening i will contact one of the New York general forum moderators and ask how to post the poll. This will decide state wide or regional gathering(s), date and location if a state wide gathering is chosen . When I started this thread the date of Feb.14,2009 (Sat.) was proposed with Feb.15,2009 as the snow date. I picked this date as it is the start of Presindents holiday weekend .I never thought about it being Valentines day.
Four lakes have been mentioned as potential spots for a state wide gathering ,I will list them here in order of preference.
      1. Oneida lake /Syracuse-Utica area  2. Sandy pond/ Pulaski area  3. Lake George /Adirondacks  $. Mechum lake / Northern Adirondacks
If I am wrong with the location of any lake my apologies.
Please look for the poll I would like to have all respones to it posted by Dec. 10,2008 .

Also as I posted there let me clarify my thinking by state wide I mean one gathering on a set date/location attended by members from all over the state. Regional would be several smaller gatherings scattered around the state on the same or different dates.
I know Oneida and Lake George are large lakes ,not Familiar with Sandy pond or Meacham lake. So anyone who knows these lakes and when they usually have safe ice please post.

Good afternoon as of five thirty this morning Rgfixit locked the poll.(thread NYS gathering) At that time 95 members had voted,49 replies were posted and the poll had 757 views. The results will stat up for a few days while we decide what we want to do,I'm listing the voting results here to save you time.

Oneida lake -37 votes  38.5% of total votes
   Sandy pond-7 votes   7.3%
   Lake George - 19 votes  19.8%
   Meacham lake-6 votes   6.3%
   Regional gathering- 19 votes  19.8%
   State gathering -* votes  8.3%
Based on this info. I propose several regional gathering scattered around the state. To date three members have said they would coordinate/host a gathering Pooley from Suffern,NY. (see his thread Southeast NY. gathering) ,Neversink Jimmy from Albany small gathering at his home on Synder's lake, and Fishing Fool from Rochester,NY. has said he will post about a gathering on Honeyone or Conesus Lakes. I do not know the date/dates for any of these events yet. Given the large vote total for Oneida lake we should try to have a gathering there hopefully some one from that area will come forward and agree to coordinate.
I know who one of the voters for Meacham Lake is unfortunately he only recently moved to the area ,so he may have limited knowledge of bait shops ,lodging ,etc. I will send him a personal message to See if would coordinate a gathering there.(northern Adirondacks)
Members who voted for Sandy pond and Lake George could do the same and hold gatherings at those lakes. Also there a numerous tournaments/derbies throughout the state where members could arrange to meet.
If the three members mentioned here could please post dates when they will hold gatherings ,we All can make plans which one/ones we Will attend. Sorry to be so wordy.   Mr.Clean-Steve

Greetings,
I have sent personal messages to Fishing Foool and the other member about hosting/coordinating regional gatherings and waiting for their replies.
I would really like to get events set date and location wise ASAP, working in the retail field advance notice must be given if I'm going to get a day/weekend off to attend one of these gatherings.
Sorry if I'm being a pest.

Good evening just to update all of you ,member Asp Fisherman is hosting a Southwestern,NY. gathering on MLk weekend Jan.17-19,2009. at Chautauqua lake please look for his thread. I received a reply from Fishing Foool(he mentioned hosting a gathering at Honeoye or Conesus lakes ) he is thinking of a social gathering food/drink no prizes. I asked him to pm me or post the date/location. I have not yet heard from the member who lives near Meachum Lake.
Since Oneida lake received the most votes in the poll I propose a gathering there on Sat.Feb.28.2009. I will do some research and post on lodging/baitshops where we will meet to access the ice. Mr.clean-Steve

Good evening I looked through the bait shop list in the New York news and info, section and found the following shops near Oneida lake.
    1.Mickey's bait-tackle
     715 south bay
     North Syracuse,NY. 315-458-7998
    2. Gander Mountain
     5864 Carmencia road   Cicero,NY  near RT.81 315-698-1100   open 7 am
     3. Not Just Bait
     1367 RT.49 near hatchery  Constantia,NY.
     4. South Shore Sportsmen's shop
        Lakeport,NY.     315-633-0630
5.Marion Manor (aka Jigs Trading Post)
     corner of RT.13-RT.31  Sylvan Beach,NY.  315-762-4810
     6. Apps -Cleveland,NY. by state docks -just east of Vellas Market
If any one knows of others or that one of these shops no longer exists please post. I will use some search engines to find lodging and look over the map and book I have on Oneida to see which access point offers the most parking and is closest to known ice fishing grounds.
Finally there appears to be some confusion about the date the gathering will be held on Sat.Feb.28,2009

well guys onieda has my vote too and i fish it all the time and let me tell you its a ice fishing gem for walleyes and perch but you have to have electronics because wlleyes and perch on tip ups are very rare in numbers even when your right on top of the fish... alsoits located right smack dab in the middle of the state so its great for a gathering of members there is the turning stone casino 5 min away with lodging all over 5 star and if your like me and dont want to drop a 100 to 150 a night on a room there are alot of mom and pop hotels to accomodate as for a banquet or dinner after we hit the lake that could be easily arranged im thinking with so many guys interested in onieda and not having fished it we should do a gathering there with a tourney but fun outing with a buy in to cover cash prizes and cover the dinner im guessing like 25 to 35 would be about the going rate wel if anyone has questions about fishing the lake or whoever posted this idea give me a call id be more than glad to help organize it Ryan O'Grady 315-272-9199 team smoke shack#1

Never fished Oneida before, and coming from Long Island I have a couple of questions:

1.  Why so many entry points??  Can't we all get on in one spot so we can actually have a complete IS meeting?

2.  We have no on-ice transportation.  How far must we walk out to get into some decent fishing?

3.  Are we (IS) members setting up in a central area so we can meet each other??  Where is that??

Not looking forward to hte 6-7 hour drive to get there, but it's worth it to get together and fish with other IS guys.  Looking forward to some good fishing and some good fun.

See you there

from new york game and fish magazine.

ONEIDA LAKE
Oneida Lake is the ultimate year-round sport fishery in New York, where the numbers of fishermen on the ice during winter weekends equal the openings in spring of the walleye and bass seasons.

They fish essentially the same areas including shoals, bars and dropoffs. Walleyes are the prime target for hardwater anglers, and according to researchers, the population is back up to average numbers.

The large Shackleton Shoals in the middle of the lake is the most noted walleye-perch hotspot. A cluster of shoals off Constantia, including Pancake, Grassy and Dakin, are also popular fish magnets, along with Messenger Shoal in the east end. Perch and panfish are also taken in good numbers on Oneida.

The most successful walleye fishermen use the new non-stretch, ultra-thin lines. At 6-pound-test, the line diameter is threadlike. At the end, they use two feet of 4- or 6-pound-test fluorocarbon leader, and a jigging spoon with half a minnow.

Oneida Lake lies north of Syracuse. I-81 crosses the west end. Take exits 30, 31 or 32 to routes 31, 13 and 49 which surround the lake. Excellent access is provided at Three Mile Bay off Route 49, five miles south of Central Square; at Toad Harbor off Shaw Drive in the town of West Monroe; and at Godfrey Point adjacent to Route 49, one mile east of Cleveland.

Just to get every one on the same page the date is Sat. Feb. 28,2009 on Oneida lake. Also I'm asking if all of you could please use this thread to post responses/comments, rather then I having to check two threads. (NYS gathering and here) Thank you.
To answer Ice Balls and Pooley's question I posted a bunch of access points in hopes of hearing from fellow members which one(s) are located closer to known ice fishing spots. Last year when CNY Panfisher and others got to gether on Oneida they accessed the lake out of Constantia,NY. looking at a map of the lake it appears Pancake and some of the other shoals Pooley mentioned are nearby around two to three miles out from shore.  This seams to be the case with most spots. (Messanger shoal, etc.)
Fishing Foool stated in a reply to the NYS gathering thread that he believes Apps bait shop in Cleveland ,
NY. runs a shuttle service. (does anyone know if this is true or have Apps phone number I could not find a listing using Yellow Pages.com )
Member Team Smoke Shack (Ryan O'grady) suggested a possible post ice banquet and cash prize(s) . I see problems with this for a banquet a number count and deposit would be required also some attending will want to fish the aft/evening hours for the late Walleye bite. Personally I prefer everyone who wants in on the prizes to bring a donation (tipup, poles jigs, line)for a prize pool. I or someone else get name phone number/address of members participating in pool. After fishing fishing we could meet at a predetermined Restaurant/bar to socialize-distribute prizes with the list those choosing not to come could be mailed their prize. Or we could just have a grab bag every member bring a wrapped prize and each one then pick from collection. (Say ten dollar value for prizes save the trouble of measuring/weighing fish and keeping a tote board.)
Finally try the Orbitz's website for lodging most of their listings are in the Syracuse or Uttica/Rome areas and range from $55 to $200/plus a night.
I will personal message Cny Panfisher and Mr.O'grady for their knowledge and feelings about meeting and fishing out of Constantia.

You should get rgfixit to sticky this page to the top of the NY general forum so everyone can see it.

Also post any relevant information on the FIRST post, on the FIRST page so people don't have to read 10 pages of text to see what is going on.

Maybe start a new thread with all information about parking, where to meet for prize pool, sign up sheet like they do for the tournament here, also is anyone going to donate 5-10 bux to local fire dept??

As far as a ice taxi, if people come without wheels, why pay for a ride? If people here are going to be there with wheels, I am sure if you make arrangements we could all get out in the same general area. Strong walkers can get to good spot easily, weak walkers can get rides as well.

There is a great amount of parking in Constantia, some right by the lake, some across the road about 200 feet from the lake, an some at the town hall which would be best for people with vehicles. Taft park is also good in Bernhards bay area, 3 miles east of Constantia, and Godfrey point is 7 miles east of Constantia, that's if you want to get away from the crowd. I think the whole idea of a get-together is just that, fish in 1 general area so you can go around and BS with the crew.

Last year we had almost 100 sign up, and about 10 showed up, 1/2 were from here in town. I would prefer you not say you are coming, than BS people into thinking a large group will show up. I almost made arrangements for a pre-fishing buffet at a local restaurant, good thing I didn't.

Ah well, 2 months to get it together, i'll help, and big scoops of minnows to all comers, i'll be at Eddies/NJB early in the morning.

Also, if you want to get in the prize pool and get your prizes, you MUST go to the reception area and stay till the deadline to get into the pool. I still have powdiddy's stuff from last year sitting here at my house. He couldn't stick around as he had to trip across the lake, and didn't want to drive after dark to the south shore.

Crappieslayer tried driving over Scriba creek, we are going to get him a set of swimmies like they have for the kiddies in the pool this year, so he will be OK. Just remember to the left of the access in Constantia is Scriba creek, go straight out or to the right. The mouth of the creek will be locked up just fine by the end of February, just don't go up the creek to RPM's. lmmfao

Pooley thank you I'm assuming you got the names from the NYS gathering-poll thread.
Cny Panfisher thank you for the information and sugestions. Just for everyones info. a company called Fishing Hot Spots,Inc. (A Recon maps&charts company ) makes a waterproof map of Oneida lake .All the areas mentioned by Cny Panfisher are located on the north shore of the lake. I purchased my copy at a local super market in the sporting goods dept. also seen them at Gander Mountain . Here is a hyperlink to the companies website ,the Oneida lake map is map number  S490

www.reconmc.com (http://www.reconmc.com)   I will post more tomorrow ,also member August West is a friend of the owners of Angler's Bay Cottages(Abc Cottages). If enough of us book a cabin we may be able to use this property as an access point.

Good afternoon, I will be calling the Angler's Bay cottages to book a cabin for myself and will post their rates. Also will be personal messaging Rgfixit shortly to see if we can sticky this topic to the top of page one of the New York forum and if there is a way to have the latest post on page one of this thread so you do not have to search through a number of pages for the latest post. I will be asking Rg to close the thread NYS gathering and if I should start a new thread on this topic.
In reading Cny Panfisher personal message I'm proposing the following.
Access Oneida Lake from either Taft's Bay park in Bernhard's Bay ,NY. or from Godfrey point both off of route 49 on the northshore of the lake, and meet at messanger's shoal or Sugar loaf area of the lake.
Fish from eight am to four pm (8am-4pm)
For the prizes have first through third for walleye and yellow perch also a kids division (twelve/under ) if enough show up. Every one who wants in bring a prize (ten dollar suggested value) register at one of the access points ,drop off prizes at Not Just Bait in Constantia or Possibly Anglers Bay Cottages before fishing. After four pm we measure fish(use weight as as tie breaker).
Then at six pm we meet at the Wander Inn in Constantia to give prizes to the winners and socialize.
For lunch there is a pizzeria that will deliver to boat launch in Constantia ,have some members pick up pies bring out to group. I 'm asking
members to bring coolers to hold drinks/ice.
Also please consider a donation to the local fire dept. (five-ten dollars) to help defray search and rescue costs,(check or money order no cash) I will get info. on fire dept. .

ICE Slammer unfortunately Angler's Bay Cottages is only renting out one cabin this winter. I booked it earlier today, to my knowledge quads and snowmobiles are allowed on the ice.
The two fishing spots I mentioned are around three or more miles out depending on access point used, we will have to get those members with atvs-snowmobiles to taxi others out and back.
If Cny Panfisher does not post a reply to my suggested gathering plan I will send him a PM. Asking for his opinions on access spots and fishing areas on lake.
Sorry about Angler's Bay not having more rooms try some of the other lodging that I have posted or the Orbitz.com website or travelocity.

Good place to start for a local room is the Bel-Air motel, it's a family owned place on route 11 about 15-20 minutes drive to north shore. I'm sure the rooms are reasonable there. 1-315-699-5991 ask for Kelly, rooms are 62 a night there. Free long-distance/local calls, freezers in room for your fish/probably small ones, I just talked to the lady there and she really sounds like good stuff.

The Holiday inn express is 3 minutes closer, probably about the same except you pay more and get free bagels for breakfast.

Just a suggestion, if anyone needs anything just PM me, my box was just emptied.

I talked to the owner of Anglers Bay Cottages yesterday, she had the one unit to rent and was still available at the time but I didn't want to rent it out from underneath Mr Clean since
he is the one I got the info from on his post. If I am able to go I'll find lodging elsewhere. I had a long talk with the very nice lady that owns the ABC, they have owned it for the last six years and said the lake has not frozen over completely the last three or four years. She also said there are " gas pockets" in the lake and the ice could be much thinner in those areas!!!
Be very careful if you venture out a long ways from shore. She said that Big Bay on the west end of the lake nearest to I-81 does freeze early and that she didn't think there were any
gas pockets there, much shallower than  most of the lake. There are guys out on the ice at Big Bay now. I have never fished this lake and only know what I've read and what this lady
told me. Just wanted to pass this on for what its worth. Hope I am able to go and get to meet some of you guys. Be safe, and good luck.  Dan

Good afternoon all, sorry Angler's Bay is not renting more cottages this winter. I think they have gotten stuck in years past it is a cash only deal in the winter.
Cny Panfisher let me know if my proposed format for the day sounds good. Should we meet earlier to be able to fish some of the morning walleye bite hours? Also if you could post the name of the fire dept. that donations are going to it would be a help to those wanting to use money orders.
Finally if all of you bringing snowmobiles-Atv's could please bring extra helmets if you have them,I believe state law require them on driver and passenger. Also have read that you need a rigid tow bar/connection to sleds/portable shelters is this true?
Finally while I have been keeping a list of members who say "I am Coming" many also add and friends ,could you all please re-post with the approximate number in your party. This will help in knowing how much pizza to order and to give the Wander Inn an idea of how many people to expect. Please remember these are small businesses that may have to bring in additional supplies to accommodate us ,Thank you all for your cooperation in this matter. The same goes for the local bait shop.

OK, I think like 20 people or something! I ended up getting the only Flu of the winter that weekend! I was mad as hell!  I've also got a couple of guys on here( Ice Shanty) since then too! What ever weekend it was, schedule the event a week later this year, the fishing was the toughest of the winter that weekend, I know because I had 3 guys from here down there, they were not IceShanty members yet then, they are now!

I see that this thread has been revived , my suggestion is to private mesage Cnypanfisher and see if he replies the last two years the gathering has been in late February. Cnypanfisher can also be private messaged on My Fish Finder.com (Ice Shanty's Sister site) .
There is also currently a similar thread titled Get Together on the NY. General Forum.

As long as I have an exact date (ice permitting of course) 2-3 weeks ahead of time I should be able to make it.
