I think Thorne or someone has a combo with fly reel. You would want a large arbor reel so it would reel more line in every turn. Just use dacron for backing.

The Marmish rig is basically all that, minus the handle to retrieve line.

I had TB make me a rod w/ a fly reel seat this summer when I was up there.  I'm still looking for a smaller nonmetallic reel for it.  I don't want the metal to hold the cold in.  They had some up there when I looked, but nothing like what I saw on the website.  I'm going to call there later today if I can.  I post back when I get an answer.  I'll also post a pick of the rod too.  It was so super bad arse when I was playing with the one they had up there.  No spin on the little tiny jigs!

I used the LLBean Quest fly reel last year.  Worked great, small, affordable, and no line twist.  Just ordered another for this year.

I think I'm just going to order this one & try it out.  Seems like the best deal I've come across.  I'll try to take some pics of the rod tonight & post some later when the reel comes.

Alot of the guys at Thorne are running the Cortland pro cast mid-arbor 3/4.
I havnt used fly reels much for icefishing but my son has and he really likes them for shallower water. He's useing the cortland and a ross flystart. Fill the reel with backing then finish off with 25 yards of your regular line. Filling the spool increases line retrieval rate.
One of the biggest benifits to the fly reel is no line twist, also lightweight.
I'll be playing with one this winter on either a quiverstick or powernoodle.

The Schooley reel (like on ICEMEN TV) is the same principle as the fly reel and far cheaper.
Its just different feeling on the rod.  Its lighter than my fly reel, and only 6 bucks.
Yourbobbersdown has them on thier web site.

Fly fishing and I didn't agree so I put my reel on one of my panfish rods tonight. I was thinking about trying it last year but never did. This thread got me thinking about it again so I am giving them a shot.

This sounds great guys.  I have a fly rod that I don't use hardly at all, but would like to put the real on one of my ice fishing rods.  This is a stupid question but, do i keep the fly line on the reel or do I go with straight 4 lb mono.  I am new to fly fishing have done it a few times.  I would love to try the reel on one of my ice rods. What do you suggest on type of line to put on the reel, from start to finish.  Thanks for the info. :)

I am very interested in this but wouldn't the size and the position of the fly reel make it difficult to hang onto the rod?

Used a small flyreel for a while but the clicker noise drove me nuts especially when super busy with the Perch bite

I thought about trying the HT ice fly reel this year. It seems to be inexpensive so if I don't like the feel it wont be a big loss.

I'll take a few picts tonight of holding the rod w/fly reel. There are a few diff ways that are very comfortable and ballanced.
Try and choose a reel that has a spool diameter in the 3-3 3/8th range. Bigger and you kill the balance and smaller and your retrieve rate is real small.
You can leave your flyline on to fill the spool but its a added weight plus any mono you put on will want to slide down through the fly line. Filling your reel with flyline backing first then 25 yards or so of your fave 2,3,4 pd ice line seems the way to go.

boomdoggie, depending on the reel, you should be able to take the spool part off, and just pull the spring out that makes the clicking.  I had to do that last year.

I have one don't waste your money. A Slater pole reel or a Uncle Bucks UB 10 is a better option.
