Crack fishing
« on: Mar 11, 2007, 01:25 PM »
Seems like higher oxygen in the water keeps more fish around and you dont even need Auger ;D ;)
Just make sure it is safe around the edge of the crack

How did you know it was safe??? It does not look like an expansion crack because of the width do you know what conditions caused it? ???

I wouldn't reccomend fishing in conditions like this to anyone, I would not feel comfortable enough with a wide open crack with exposed water to fish near it. Best of luck to ya, but I would just hate to hear about someone falling in because they fished in open water on late winter ice.

Just have some help around, I learned the hard way once, ice was undercut. I gotta admit though the fishing was good. Went back the next day with a spinning rod to "stand off" some. Looking back, I was an idiot.

I made a hole with my Auger close to the crack like 3 feet from it
Ice was 8 inches 3 feet from the crack and 5 inches where the crack was and there was only 3 feet of water
I think the ice cracked like that because the lake is 5-6 feet lower then last year and they started to fill it back so when the water rise the ice cracks

man forget the tip ups, take a spud up and down and check the ice quality, then move up and down the crack with a jig or a spinner bait like some others have suggested.

Its its own feel fishing Ice that is maginal,  thin ice, edge of ice, and others....gets you more pumped.  I love to go out early in the year and be the first on the ice, you just develop a feel for the conditions and keep an eye on how it freezes up.  I've fished on 2 inches and the only time I have broke through the ice was in march on the river when I thought the ice was 3 feet thick.  Its about having respect for the ice and not assuming your safe, thats how you stay safe ice, even 2 inches.

I fish near open water all the time, I've never fished a crack like that, but have fished holes that were as big around as a dinner table, a dog sled race went on and they left all the branches used to mark the trail in a big pile in the middle f the lake, a week later that huge area melted down and it was 5 inches all around it. I jigged in it and caught more fish there then anywhere else.
