Fun find w/ pics
« on: Oct 13, 2011, 07:40 PM »
I was out tracking down an Uncle Henry's find when I met a gentleman who seemed as though he hadn't talked to a live person in years.  After taking a walking tour of his wood shop, his garage, and his sheds, he noticed that I had taken an interest in some of his fishing items.  He asked if I did any ice fishing, to which I responded with an affirmative.  He wound up digging into a closet to come out with a black wooden box.  When he set it down and told me to open it, I found these inside...

He had a bunch of old school tip-ups, some with reels and some with yarn or twine spooled on the shaft of the tip-up.  Thinking that he was looking to sell them to me, I asked him what he was asking for them.  He thanked me for taking the time to visit with him and told me to take them with me...he hadn't been fishing in years and hoped that I'd find a use for them.

Now, what to do with these old beauties?  They work, but I think that they'd make better decorations, somehow.  Any suggestions?

I would be willing to take any one of them off of your hands, one would be plenty.   I would use it as you suggested, as a decorative piece down in the basement, it is decorated with vintage fishing equipment.  Let me know if you would be interested in doing that?

Thanks-
Arlo

Oh, I missed the part about what to do with them. I'd try a couple out! Why not? They worked for the old timers!

You've got plenty to do both with....decorate, and use.

p.s. decorations don't catch fish.  ;)

Those are very functional traps, My grandfather had the same ones, and they work fine on a day above 32 degrees...  Put them to use they have at least another 50 years in them. ;D

I found a bunch of old gear like that at a yard sale a few years ago. It's nice to see what we started with and how far we have come in the hardwater fishing!

Throw them away.

Haz, I considered doing just what you suggested, but I think that a big part of what makes them so interesting is the years of use that they have seen.  Included in the box that he gave me were about a dozen new flags on the metal strips and a few new spools.  I'm not sure that renovating them would be an improvement.

But you're right.  With my new job I travel close to his house almost daily.  I'm going to stop by with a few fillets as soon as the water gets solidified.

That's awesome .Ron. Some conversation and a walk down the ice fishing memory lane. You might even learn a thing or two
