Ice this Morning
« on: Sep 14, 2007, 09:22 PM »
Had a good cover of ice on the dog's water bowl outside this morning.  Temp was 22 degrees in SE MT.  Won't be long now.

For PC purposes, the dogs have heated houses and bowls, but stay inside at night year round.

We got down below freezing last nite as well.  A good frost on the lawn and garden.  I work up on Alaska's north slope in the oil fields and head back up on Thursday for 2 weeks.  I'm predicting there will be snow and a fair share of ice!

Getting better here in Maine.  32F at 6am.  The pond was "smoking" this morning a great tell-tale that it's giving up a tremendous amount of heat to the cool night air.  Historically, we're able to fish by mid-December.  Let's hope this cooling trend continues so as soon as we get done asking: "Get ya' deer yet?", we can say: "Makin' ice!"

North Slope, Alaska (Prudhoe Bay / Deadhorse):  the ponds and lakes are mostly frozen, it has snow a few times in the past week (little to no accumulation).  The cold is working it's way south!

Here's the scoop.  I work about 700 miles north of where I live.  So, even though everything is frozen at work, things are still open water at home. I wish I could find a way to drill some holes after work, but I'm beat by the end of the day.  I get up around 4:30, get to work at 5:45, work until 6, get cleaned up, eat dinner and do it all again.  Two weeks on, two weeks off.  We should have fishable ice at home by mid November-ish (hopefully sooner- which has happened in the past).
