Full moon Lake Trout
« on: Mar 04, 2020, 11:37 PM »
The full moon is coming up on March 9th. Ice Fishing for Lake Trout should be good from the 8th to the 10th with peak periods on the solunar table around midnight, Sunday and Monday night, at least in our area.

The last Full Moon in February, I was fortunate enough to catch these two. Although I think weather is the biggest factor in fish activity, when it matches up with the moon cycle, fishing can be really exciting!

Never had luck fishing the full moon for browns, hard or soft water.

Do lake trout feed at night? Never paid attention to the moon for freshwater fishing daytime fishing.

I have jigged many Lakers at 2am, so yes they feed at night under the ice.

Cool, do you find that the extra moonlight has a positive or negative effect on that bite?

I've admittedly only tried a few times but never had any luck at night.

Maybe I'll try with a full moon out.....next season

I’ve found the daytime fishing can be rather slow on some lakes around the full moon. Many of our lakes have clear water, and they feed under moonlight.

I’ve never even marked a fish in the dark.

To be honest, I have never ice fished at night before. I was going to try it this time because the weather looked decent and the sky is expected to be clear so I thought I would give it a shot. The last full moon I caught both during the day during high solunar periods. This coming full moon there are also peak periods around 5 am, a more traditional time to catch lake trout early morning, so I also hope to catch those periods as well. I just have a tent, this is where next year’s ice hut would come in handy.

Should be a good time to catch some big pike as well.

The absolute best ice fishing in my experience is when setting full moon and rising sun occur at same or close times or vice versa.  Fish seem to be very active and hungry.

Last time I was out at night ice fishing for lakers it was a heavy overcast. I can not stress how important "glow" was to the action...

Well we did not catch any Lake Trout, but hooked two pike. There is still another day and a half of the full moon’s effect.

It was super cool fishing out in the moonlight.

Caught my biggest laker yesterday, 1 day after full moon. Was jigging for perch, beast hit right in middle of afternoon major. Lucky I was able to get it up the 6" ice hole.
30 inches, bit over 8 lbs.

I should print this and take it with me, so the next time I am fishing a 6” hole and someone asks don’t you think that hole is too small? I can take this out and say nope! Great job!

LOL. Just as I was thinking I better use my 8" for perch on that lake in the future.

Split the difference and use a 7”, I love mine, but will pull out the 8” for targeting lake trout and pike.

I have 8 and 10 inch augers as well, just don't use them for perch, which were my target species ;)
