When I go ice fishing I have enough gear to take 6 of my friends and me fishing and all they need to bring is the beer. I think that is a fair trade. The only thing I am missing is a vex. then that would complete the set. Adam
Why wait to spring time to fish when u have perfectly good ice to fish on.

I have to admit that I have way too much gear for one person.  But, I like to bring someone new to the sport and have enough "extra gear" to make their experience as complete as possible.  I fish inland lakes in Western Pa. and on the Western End of Erie which requires totally different equipment.  With over 30 years of purchasing must have equipment before and after the seasons my basement is full of historic stuff and "state of the art electronics.
My biggest purchase was a quad for Erie.  A three mile walk pulling a loaded up shanty works up quite a sweat that you have to deal with once you start fishing.  Several years ago my buddy sent a photo, in a Christmas card, of me grinning ;D while holding a 9 lb walleye with our Cherokee in the background with tracks leading from the horizon.  I had some real explaining to do to my wife since I promised to keep the car on dry land ;)  I have three shanty's, a homemade one, a used "fish trap" and a Clam 3000 purchased at 1/2 price. I have 4 augers, a 6" spoon (my first auger), 8" strikemaster ( my old friend), 7" strikermaster ( $ 3.00 in a garage sale) and a 4" strikemaster ( my son pulled it from some curbside trash).  How can a ice fisherman pass up buying 8 Frabill Thermo tip-ups @ 3.50 ea.?  They are much easier to use than the bucket full of wooden tip-ups, right?  Three years ago I said I was done buying icefishing equipment, then my buddy got a Aqua View and then a Vexilar.  Guess what I asked Santa for the past two years?  Well, I am thuough buying stuff for icefishing, as soon as I get that little tripod for holding the camera still, and a GPS that has waypoints and lake contours, and some of those new....

Well Blaster, sounds like you are just getting started with ice fishing. Once you have been doing it for awhile, your stock piles will begin to grow. Keep at it!

Rockman...we're right up there at a "photo finish". I am a gear guy and won't be without most anything.....I agree that a lot of the gear I have is just so the others I fish with with have a good time out on the ice. I recently bought three new slammer tip-ups with rods etc. and on the first time I took them out for a trial run....I took a friend and his son out for the day. They have never been ice fishing before in their lives. We got five fish on the slammers and a number of others on my polars and the rest jigging. A good mix of Trout, Bass, Perch, and Gills. The thing is.....my friend's son has a brain cancer and he's been told that there isn't much they can do for him and to live his life to the fullest ( he's 27 yrs. old) so as much as I wanted to run for one of those slammers when it went off I hollered....THERE'S A FLAG ON THE SLAMMER ....GO GRAB IT!!!!!..... same with the tip-ups, I let them have at em'. I have a FL-18 and a FL-8 and I showed them how to use them and  just kinda stood back and "coached". They both were amazed at what the electronics could do! They had a great time and so did I just being there....WK ;D
Give your son a fish, and he will eat for a day.....teach your son to fish and eventually he'll end up kicking your @ss every time you fish together!!!

It will happen when you have a habit like FISHING ( ice or open ). If there is two or three in the family that fish then you have two or three times the stuff . And then you never have the right bait or lure at the time you need it ......

Just my 2 cents worth

If you need to buy a bigger truck to haul all your gear you may have too much. Notice I said may. Always better to have some extra stuff; then you can thin it down for specific trips.

too much stuff??? i always say the more people the more fun it is. So the more stuff i have the more people i can bring along and the more fun i have it all works out in the end because when they are not paying attention and playing football on the ice or something and i have 45 tip ups out if one of them goes off ill just slowly sneek out to it and gt the fish without them realizing it. So its really just basic math More stuff=more people=more fun!!

It's not how much gear you have, it's how well you use it.
You can never have too much gear, only too little time to use it all!
