well, I just checked a few of the long range outlooks and they all say the same thing. Moderate El-Nino. The prediction for this winter is above average temps almost everywhere with more chance of rain than snow in the NE. I'm hoping they are wrong, but they nailed it the last few years.

You guys are welcome a bit further north. Be sure to bring Uncle Chez along!! 😎

Thanks Brother, I hope we can do it this year! But sometimes ya just wanna stop off at the local lake for some pannies or perch and it sucks when you can't walk out cuz the ice is rotten. I'm hoping we get some good ice early. Last year I gave up early because of rotten ice on my hometown lakes. Way too many sad stories last year.

That would be one heck of a long ride with Uncle Chez in the truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D
-
Not sure where you got your report but I just read that this is going to be a colder, snowier (not so good) winter. We can only hope because we are long over do. Unfortunately if the snow follows the pattern of all the rain we've had we can be shoveling our way out on to the ice. Let's hope that the cold is correct. Lou

Disposable ear plugs would fix that. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hopefully this forcast is correct..

yeah, I'm hoping for a good winterlike winter. I hate a muddy Christmas. I never put much stock in the farmers almanac, it seems more like entertainment reading, they've been wrong as much as right. I tend to stick with the noaa forcasts, they have been pretty spot on every year. I just hope they blew it for this year. But like they said in the article I read, it's early and things change. I'm hoping for a foot and a half of ice with little snow... right up into April ;D
-
Hello all this will be my 3rd winter here and I still have not got out on the ice. Moving to Gettysburg area from michigan and I just have not found good ice. But I am learning of more lakes the longer I am here. So hopefully will get out this year.
-
Way, Way, Way too early to predict the ice. Seen forecasts showing warm winter, one cold winter and one mod temps with lots of snow. This tells me that no one knows what the heck it is going to do until ice forms. No doubt we will be able to get on somewhere in PA no matter what the weather is. Nez

yeah... wooly bear worms.... the actually theory was that the larger the orange band was meant the more mild a winter would be. Here's a link to a story about it. Personally, I'm pretty sure it's a folklore myth.
https://www.almanac.com/content/woolly-bear-caterpillars-and-weather-prediction
-
LOL - the wooly worms again.
I personally think it is too far in advance to make any predictions. What killed us last year was the constant rollercoaster of temps with several warm spells that ruined the ice. No way you can predict patterns like this four months in advance. They don't even get the forecast for tomorrow right.
Hoping for more orange in the wooly worms and a good season. In the meantime, I enjoy the good flows on the creeks and work on my trout fly fishing skills which I really good into this year.
-
Oh, I just read the link - we want more black in the worms so hoping for lots of black and little orange...

When I changed to oil in my truck and wife's SUV the in the beginning of the month I found a mouse nest in both the air dams at the air filter. If they're already building nests we might be in for a really cold winter. I've never seen them do that in first week of September.
-
Farmers Almanac says cold and snowy.
-
Lots of Acorns on the ground everywhere.
That has allways been a good sign of a cold winter.
Just my OPINION.
No one has to ride with me.

Take it easy Brother, there's not many times I get to get a shot in on you and couldn't pass it up. I agree with you about the acorns being a good sign of a long cold winter, it's Mother Natures way of taking care of the animals.

It went down to 39 at my house this morning and they're saying it's supposed to be in the 30's for the lows for the next ten days. I'm liking that and hope it gets rid of the never ending rain.
-
cold temps here for the next 10 days or more. the water is really low here. there is less of it to freeze helps early ice right? wishful thinking.
:woot:
picked a large amount of nightcrawlers the other night when it was 75 and raining.
:flex:
-
If these temperatures keep dropping like they have lately , we'll have good ice by December ! Just had to keep it positive . ;D All the gear is cleaned up since last year . So as soon as the brave souls of early ice give the thumbs up , I'm ready to roll . :icefish:

starting to look a little better...
-
I fired up the coal stove for the season this past weekend and from the looks of the temps we're supposed to be getting it'll be burning from now until the end of winter.
-
I have high hopes for the season. I was prepping gear over this past weekend as it was a washout for archery hunting.
-
All the reports I've seen say long and cold winter. Farmers Almanac says the same for what that's worth.
-
That's good news in my book.

I don’t know if I’d trust a forecast from a MILLERSVILLE weather guy! ::)
-
I was without power for the last 3 days from the ice storm that blew through . If that's any indication of this coming winter , I'd say we're in for a lot of ice fishing time .  :icefish:
-
The past 4-5 years I've spent more time on my buddies boat than on the ice down here in SE PA.... These 3 week seasons are getting old !

Up here (Quebec), we know how to predict the upcoming winter. Here's how it all started...
The idian chief looked at all the signes, wooly bears, mouse nests, onion peels, beaver huts, everything and predicted a very harsh winter so he informed the tribe. Immediately, they began preparing and mostly chopping enough firewood. When they thought they had enough wood, they went back to the chief and asked if they had gathered enough wood, the chief said no... we need more!
So they gathererd more wood and again came to the chief thinking they had enough. Again, the chief said No, we need much more to last this long cold winter coming very soon. So they gathered yet again more wood. They had LOTS of firewood so again, off to see the chief. Surely this time he would agree that enough is enough...
The chief looked at all the wood and a feeling of doubt came over him. Had he pushed the tribe too hard? Was the winter really going to be that long and cold? He had been right before, but this time, he wasn't sure. So he decided to ask for another opinion and called the Weather Network. He asked them what kind of winter they predicted. The answer was a definite loooong and cooold winter straight ahead. He was relieved but curious as to how they could make such a strong prediction so he asked the man. He said "well, it's very easy and surefire, we look at what the local indians are doing and this year, they are gathering wood like never before!
By the way, we don't worry about getting ice or not, we have three feet... every year.
;D ;)
-
That's nice but this is PA, we're right on the ice belt line. Sometimes we have to guess from county to county where the ice might be safe and sometimes lake to lake in a single county. Last year we started out great with record cold and the ice grew fast. Then half way through the winter it was 65° and the ice started rotting.
-
Yep , and I wait till I see the first brave souls out on the ice before I even consider walking out . This old man isn't going swimming in November . But , I'll definitely do my best to help rescue someone .
-
My guess is someone will be out by the end of next week. ::) It will be at elevation (think Mt. Pocono or similar) and probably a smallish pond or lake that is protected from the wind. I however, will not be driving two hours to fish on 2" of clear ice; waiting for the call when it hits 4.

Van you can call me anytime

I'm lucky to get myself on some of the lakes up North and usually am not in the position to bring a guest. That said I'm looking forward to fishing Hopewell this year and maybe I'll try to get to Ontelaunee; haven't been in a couple years. If only I knew someone that could find the "sunken bridge." ;)
-
It’s looking better and better! Maybe that Millersville guy knows something after all! ;)

Bring on the ICE!!!

Here ya go Van .
But there is one magnificent bridge still under the water. Engineers decided to leave the famed Four-Arch Stone Bridge at Berkley intact, Meiser said. The bridge, which is 22 feet wide and 311 feet long, is in the middle of the lake, about a half-mile from the parking areas at Route 73.
The article also stated , in dry seasons the bridge can actually be seen above the water .
-
First I'll start with it is looking good; some frigid weather coming this week; especially at elevation.
The location thing (sunken bridge) was a joke since Capt. C. already knows where it is.
-
Wonder what happens when DEP condemns that dam as a high hazard (kind of surprised they haven't yet).
-

Rumnutt the guy is pretty good. Shallow ponds by me have a skim of ice on top.
-
Good luck to you guys tomorrow on your opener. 😎
RuttNutt, I can taste the deer dogs now!😁

Got the brand new eskimo wide one inferno put together put the Rods in the augers blades are changed and the Marcum m1 is charged up.. the weather is starting to look very good for us to cap over the lakes and start building some ice I'm hoping by Christmas to be on some ice I've had local ponds froze over numerous times already.. come on cold temps we are getting itchy here in pa hahaha...
-
all I know the water temps are a lot colder for beginning of December than the last few years. had some ice on small ponds last week. last I checked this week here on out looks good, extended forecast looks mild than long range temps get cold near end of the month. I just want a good artic blast and stay at least moderately cold to build ice, no me of this cold warm cold warm that doesnt set up the bigger lakes well
-
Before we got all the rain last Monday and relatively warm temps the few days after a bunch of lakes in my area were capped over and some still are except for the edges. I think with the cold temps it'll start making ice pretty quick and if things hold the way they are now we might be out on small lakes or ponds next weekend.
-
I just drove over lake Arthur today on 422 . Not an ounce of ice to be seen . But , I'm still gathering up a few new tools for this year , so I could use some extra time to get ready .
-
18° this morning on my drive in to work. I hope we're done with the rain! I got 2 weeks off before Christmas and I'm hoping to spend most of it walking on water!
-
Always wanted to try Allegheny Reservoir for ice fishing... anybody have any experiences, stories, tips, suggestions??

Spider I hope your spending it on the ice not the water! If the rain holds off in two weeks we might be in luck.
-
I was walking on water today in Erie boys! Only a pond but it's a start!
-
Dang; It is looking good; especially at elevation.
-
sure is think it might of hit 34 for the high today weekend looks promising

I'll take a cold rain over a inch or two of insulating snow, sure I know a few ponds that will be capped tonight if they wernt capped last night already. with these temps might have to take the spud bar out and check this weekend
-
Fricken great. More rain on Monday and Tuesday. >:(
-
At this point. It would be If it all melted & then start out fresh. Than have all that rotten ice in the mix. No ?
