Advice on Rigging Plastics for Gills...
« on: Sep 30, 2011, 09:55 AM »
To those of you who use the squish balls, how do you put the plastic on your hook?  Do you you thread it on like a jig body or just hook it through the middle like a wacky worm rig for bass?  Any other ways to do it?

Just found an end cap at the local dollar store with a bunch of the squish balls about the size of a baseball for $1 each.   :o  What colors work best for you guys?
The test of man is not how how far he will go to win, but how far he will go when he has already lost.

It is basically a kids toy.  it is a soft plastic ball with tentacles about 1 -1 1/2" long.  The tentacles are cut off and used on jigs for inticing movement / action...

Something like this... http://www.joissu.com/prodinfo.asp?number=56-900

Sometimes lots of wiggly actions works better sometimes very little actions works better.  So I hook my plastics in various ways, but I always start with the typical thread on hook like a normal jig look first.

Just cut the tails off torn up Bass Tubes. Plenty of colors, one snip with scissors and you've got 30-40 tails from basically junk. Take the scissors to the hollow part and one can come up with all types of creatures. Started using plastics back in the 70s this way. Bass plastics, scissors, x-acto knife  and have some fun

The new F&W magazine addresses this and what they recommend as far as plastics.

There is so many better options than what they talk about.......

CJ&S, J&S, KJB, the whip, Northland Impulse, Gulp, Gulp alive, Powerbait, Atomic glow tubes, maki, Micro spoons, bobby garland, lindy,  ......I can go all day.

Yes Little atom can take credit for starting alot of it but there is so many small guys out there....

As mentioned by Ekruger, Maki plastics has many suggestions on the website on how to rig plastics. Although he only talks about his specifically, you can gain knowledge on vertical vs horizontal rigs and threading and hooking. Good luck in your search!

Old Goat- plastics make a huge difference. Most times I still add a spike for a bit of meat scent.

Thanks I usually never use plastics maybe I'm short changing myself by not using them more

Sometimes plastics outfish bait here. Last year I had a grocery bag full of crappie and gills using a #10 black ratso, while my dad sitting next to me and my buddy right outside the shanty caught nothing on waxies/spikes.
