Title: 1 stick or 2?
Post by: Iceassin on Feb 19, 2019, 11:32 AM
So I just broke one of the cross sicks on one of my tip ups for the 2nd time after repairing it once ( it's plastic). I was getting ready to throw it away when I thought...why wouldn't 1 stick work? Might wobble a bit on top of the hole cover so thinking "wth"... give it a shot. Comments or experiences?

I've got one that broke a few years ago. Been running it like that since, only issue I've seen is it allows the tip up to lean and the spool to rub the inside of the hole sometimes, could add some tension the fish might feel. But for pike, never had an issue with it.

You're talkin' Polars right Iceassin? That plastic is almost unglueable. One thing you could do to rescue it is sleeve the break. Find something light, moderately stiff and certainly corrosion proof that will just slip onto the "stick". A little tight as opposed to loose would be preferred. PEX tubing comes to mind. If it's slightly too small put it in a pot of boiling water for a few moments, handle with gloves w hen it comes out.

Gently separate the break, slip the tubing all the way onto one side, align the break then slide the tube over the break. If it's tight enough it shouldn't slip off easily. O just run a small screw into each end to kind of lock it in place.

Or you got the "Fisherman's" cross sticks? There I'd find some aluminum or brass rod, cut a piece to span the break with some extra for support on each side, heat the rod on your stove top or hot plate then press the hot metal into the plastic until flush. Could probably use a torch lighter to heat the plastic that oozes out to cover enough of the rod to secure it in place. If you do it on the correct side they should still fold up just like usual. Could even do two sides to add durability. If you want it to look pretty you could always slide on some heat shrink tubing before you do the "laser surgery". After the joint cools, trim any unsightly excess, slide the HST over the repair and heat.

First off, thanks for the suggestions. Secondly, I already threw out the broken stick. The repair was done using some " hi-tech resin" from an auto body shop. It actually lasted quite a awhile but I think the cold temps played a big part in its demise. Biggest issue was it snapped right at the hole where the bolt goes through. However,  I may look for some 1/2" HDPE stock and cut a new one. It was the HT ETU-10. Been using them for years with no issues. It initially broke because I was a little over zealous with the spud busting the ice loose. I've since bought a hand held chisel.   ;D

Yep. Same plastic as their Polar cousins. That's a tough spot to repair.

I wouldn't even look for pricey HDPE unless you have a source for a cutoff you can have for little or nothing. A length 1/2 PVC pipe would do the trick. If you want it black, paint it. Or get the grey electrical conduit stuff (tougher than plumbing grade stuff) Might have to use a slightly longer thru bolt. All the Polar fittings are 8x32 IIRC. Or even a piece of wood.

Often it's cheaper to contribute to the landfill but I like the challenge.  ;)2

At the risk of being considered "racist", my neighbor bestowed upon me the title of "King of Afro-Engineers". If there's a will, there's at least a couple heirs wrangling on how to get more...  ::)

Yup...that's me. And not that I'm a hoarder, but I do hate to throw things away..."This looks like something I can use someday". A piece of wood, plastic, rubber band, duct tape, paper clip...I WILL get this fixed!  ;D

That's me also. I have been called the same thing several times.. if something breaks I've got some way to rig it to work again, no matter how stupid it looks.

Give me a scrap wood pile and an assortment of drywall screws and I'll put about anything back together.
