first time ice fishing this year and need help!!!
« on: Feb 06, 2014, 02:20 PM »
Just started ice fishing this year and don't know much. I am fishing lake trout i have been to lake winnisqaum (off Belmont beach) and had no luck, i use a buck tail jig with a piece sucker on the end. Does anyone know any spots i can try for lake trout, that will give me a good chance of catching something... any tips would be nice... THANKS!  P.S. i live in New Hampshire in the lakes region

that belmont beach area is decent for lakers. find 40-50 fow.try moving downlake from the beach. chum it up with some diced sucker or baitfish and be persistent. cut some extra holes and bounce around. you'll find them. pound the bottom with your jig.no need to lift to far. plenty of great research can be found here too.

The more mobile you are, the more spots you can target and the easier you will get on fish. The best low investment thing you can do is get Navionics app for your smart phone. Look closely at the depth charts/maps. Find places that are 'text-book' for your target species. For lakers, submerged bumps, shelves, ledges or humps near significant drop offs into deeper water. Start there.

In the past I have had good luck on the north end of Governors Island in about 25 to 30 fow, real rocky bottom over there..

X2 on the navionics app. Best investment you can make.

I second the navionics app. use that to find steep breaks and underwater islands. try to fish in 30 to 50 fow. use all the popular jigs you here about on here and you'll be catching more lakers than you know what to do with. I fish off of Belmont beach all the time and haven't been skunked yet this year.
If you ain't outdoors you ain't living!!!!!!
