Insurance for Quad
« on: Feb 12, 2008, 04:50 PM »
I know in Canada if you are on the ice w/ no insurance the ticket can be $5000.00 ( at least I hear). Do you need INS on a quad in MI for being on the ice or is the ORV tag enough? I have my quad on a Polaris card so you do not need insurance like if you had a loan on it.

I've been checked a couple times and they were only interested in seeing the ORV sticker. That's just for the vehical ... make sure you have your helmet and goggles!
That mistake cost me over $50.00 the first time I was checked. They also gave me a stern warning about an extra rider on a bike with only one set of foot pegs. They made sure I understand that in their eyes a quad is still a motorcycle. No more riders than what it's built for.
Get the insurance though, it's dirt cheap and you can set that up over the phone. They just need the VIN number.

I had insurance on my quad, the funniest thing was I had free road side service and free towing. I thought it was kinda silly to have it when I drive it about 100 miles a year.

You can pick up an ORV at any place that sells hunting/fishing licenses

I carry liability on my sled also, but does that cover you if you go through the ice?

Only your insurance company can give you specifics on your particular policy.  You may very well have "Replacement Insurance"  but is there  recovery insurance involved?

Does The Free roadside...freetowing cover that???  I doubt it if you are 4 miles out on the Bay....lol

Liability doesn't cover you or the sled , quad, only other people and property.

You would have to request coverage for going through the ice. Not all companies offer that particular type of comprehensive coverage.

I have yet to hear of any insurance companies that pay for anything if you go through the ice....They will pay to have it removed (just the towing and at a portion) but you will be stuck with the repair and fines.
