Some Brookies and Splake before it all melts
« on: Jan 03, 2007, 11:45 AM »
Was able to get out today and find some ice, figured I'd better get out before we get all of this weather up in the forties.  Ice was a good solid 3-4" of black ice.  A little less than I'd like but I stayed up close to shore.  This is the first trip ever that I felt the need to wear a life jacket.  Was about for about three hours and was rewarded with two Splake in the 10-12" class and one 14 1/2" fat brookie that spit up a ton of smelts.  Was one other man out there fishing and he too landed 3 splake in the 10-16" range.  Sorry guys no pictures, batteries on my digital died so only had a disposable. (also forgot my iceshanty card to register in the derby :( )  All in all a great day, if it's below freezing tonight I might be convinced to go again tomorrow morning, any one interested?

I can't speak from personal experience but like I said I've seen a bunch of people fishing by the boat launch there on flying pond and I've heard throught the grapevine that they are catching some trout, but most of the pond is still unsafe which tends to group everyone right there at the boat launch, I tend to try and find places that no one else is fishing.  Ever want to come up and fish this way there is alot of water in the area to fish, escpecially if we get some cold.  As long as the weather drops below freezing I'll be back out after Splake again tomorrow morning, if I get anything I'll post some pics.

Thanks for the info. I'm actually looking for some good brook trout waters. I mainly fish warmwater ponds for bass, pickerel, perch etc. I'd like to try for some brookies sometime this year....any suggestions?

For brookies just look at the stocking report for the lakes in your area.  I've always found that early season is best as they tend to get fished out early, many times you can hammer them right off the boat launches as this is normally where they are stocked and many of them don't travel very far.  Try fishing in close to shore with either a small shiner/smelt or worms.  Hope this helps.

Got out again this morning and was not dissapointed.  One togue, two splake, and a brookie. Togue and Brookie are going to make chowder, Splake got released for another day.  Little Togue, but at least it gets me in the tourney.

It was a cool morning, not nearly as warm as the weather man predicted.  I had 3 1/2-4 1/2" of ice every where I checked, but the inlet and outlet of the lake still had quite a bit of open water around them.

Hey thanks, As far as ice goes, theres several spots with fishable ice within 15-20 minutes of my house and I'm only about an hour north of you.  We haven't been loosing ice (as far as I can tell) as it's been dropping down into the twenties at night.  If you want some suggestions send me a PM and I'll give you a couple spots that I know have some ice.  I won't be out fishing this weekend as I have a  Natn'l Guard drill weekend, but I can send you in the right direction if you like.

I'm guessing you are talking about Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes chain, no I've never fished it. Theres an awful lot of water around here to cover, it's on the to do list though.

Why do I "need" an assault rifle? Because I'm not nearly as effective with my as$ault rock.

Sorry, I haven't been online all weekend.  With this warm weather and rain I'm not sure if anything is safe or not.

Any idea how the conditions are at flying or crowell?

I'm still hearing good reports from crowell from the guys at hardcore sledder. I will check flying pond as I go right by it on my way to crowell.

Be REAL careful, Nick.  Lost a lot of ice today in Kennebec County, and places a little further north that didn't got slop on top to disguise the bad spots.
