I love the flags, they look great and I am jealous. I noticed the tilts and wondered as to how they were finished. Looks like they were stained and possibly urethane. Am I correct.

Yes they were stained with red mahogany and coated with about 10 coats with clear high gloss poly. They came out really nice and I do vinyl graphics part time so that is how I did my flags..

Jig,
I tend to agree with your thoughts. Everyone says they want a custom rod until they find out that the guy building it isn't doing it for practice ,he is trying to make a living,  then they dont really want it anymore..If you find someone to build good rods for $30.00 each and that is willing to build alot of them at that price ,GOOD LUCK because as a rod builder I can tell you that he isnt making any money at it,so how long is he gonna keep at it? just alittle food for thought.
It's true, most rod builders build ice rods to make a profit but there are exceptions to the rule.  I know of one guy in MN who uses it as a draw for his open water rod business.  He doesn't loose money and he does build a lot of ice rods.  Me, I retired with a disability and build ice rods for the enjoyment and to build a clientele.  I won't loose money, but my time is free so I don't feel I have to charge as much as other might.  An open water rod is a different story all together.  But to say I won't be here next year or that the quality of my rods is poor, is wrong.  I knew a guy who repaired reels ( I do as well ) for 30 yrs.  He wasn't really concerned with profits either, it was his hobby.  He was well known and did quality work.  Not everyone is motivated by money.  It may not be easy to find someone like me, but there are guys and gals out there, that love there hobby/craft.
