Newest Hotspot - Lake Winnipeg East Side
« on: Mar 04, 2013, 09:47 AM »
Interesting that we need to find out from our USA friends where the newest hotspots are in Manitoba. I've followed this forum for a while now and had nothing to contribute until now so here is my first post. ;D

The other day I was enjoying the Jets game at the South Beach Casino and speaking to an American visitor up for some walleye fishing while his wife gambled. He was telling me about this hotspot close by that was giving them lots of the trophy Lake Winnipeg walleye they had come for. He seemed credible and knew his stuff and said that they've just been killing them!” on Lake Winnipeg.

He had difficulty explaining exactly how to get there but showed me on Google Earth. Ends up being not that far from the mouth of the Red on the east side. From what I can figure the easiest route is to head up due north from Libau for about 8 miles to the end of the road. There are other roads one could take but the best would be to check it out first on Google Earth.

Google Earth coordinates to end of the road
50 deg 21’50.52”N
96 deg 43’01.74”W

He said you need a sled or quad with tracks (like his) to follow the creek to the lake, and then about a mile or two onto the lake. He also mentioned a GPS is a must to be able to get back to the creek mouth.

I don't usually give up hotspots but I figure I would follow MikeyPikeys example and let the locals in on it too. Good luck and share your success if you try the spot.

Sadly I don't have a sled or quad and my old truck would be useless to me so I'm stuck with Balsam I guess :-\

It kinda looks like if you followed that road north, then jumped on the creek to the lake; you end up at Pruden's Creek.  It's been good all year.  Just tough to access with all of the snow.  Definitely sled or tracs.

Good luck to those that can get that far out.  It's 13 km from Balsam Harbour and about 17 km from Chalet Beach road.  That's a road trip!

Prudens is no longer a "couple trucks" kinda spot. Won't be able to find a parking spot down that road anymore haha lol.

Lake Winnipeg South Basin is a very large fishery and I don't think all the ice fisherman that fish there have much impact on fish numbers compared to what is taken out by the commercial guys and their nets. From the satelite view this appears to be the closest access to the mouth of the Red from any road access and would be nice if the Province could punch a winter road through to the lake so it can be accessed by truck once the ice is set. A quick run with a front end loader would do it. Obviously I'm being selfish as I can't afford a sled or a quad on tracks... ::)

Problem at Prudens is limited parking, always seems to be a idiot or two that seem to think its alright to park right at the turn around point, making it difficult to turn a big rig around to go park, another issues this theft, better lock up everything,  and vandalism, angry locals!  I'm done with prudens, I have found a better and safer access!

Pruden Creek access:  Friday--35 vehicles, Saturday 31 vehicles, Sunday--41 vehicles.  This is not a secret spot by any means.  As Carcus stated, parking is along side the road, no turn around, straight mud as soon as the sun comes out in the next day or so.  Knock yourselves out.

That spot is/was called Whittles Point back in the day.

It is still called Whittle's Point and it provides access to Pruden Creek.  I should have added that a little over half of the number of vehicles parked along Whittle's Point road were MB.  There was and SK plate and ON plate there too.

The American is long gone home and may never return, it was worth a beer to learn of a good spot not far from home but where only half of those accessing it were Manitobans.

Obviously this was someone else’s hotspot and they didn’t want to share with others on this forum but it’s a big lake and I think it can take a little pressure from a few more Manitoban ice fishermen. It’s not like there is only one hump or one point or one hole out there. It has hectors and hectors of frozen water to fish in.

As a matter of fact I think I should speak to some of my friends from the Brokenhead Reserve and suggest this might be a way to generate some income in the winter – provide truck access to the lake and/or parking near the mouth of the Red or Brokenhead River for $5-$10 per vehicle (less than live minnows, LOL) – could bring in $500 to $1000 per weekend if the fishing is as hot as I was led to believe.

Cut out the waterworks and share the resource!! ;D ;D ;D

By the tone of your reply I would guess this is one of the spots you have been hitting regularly with success. I wonder what the DNR guys would find in your freezer at home. Feel free to reply if it is less than your daily possession limit. ;D

You can come look in my freezer anytime you want! I don't really know why your hung up on an ice road...not gonna happen! Your friends on the reserve don't own that land so no chance of charging a fee anyways! Also as you call them your friends, they know quite well about that area as they have been night lighting and poaching in that area for years!!

Punch your winter road, i can run 20 different ways up that marsh! I pay enough all year! Not paying for a plowed road. Sad part is I grew up fishing that creek and now it's swarmed! Real new hotspot there!!!  ::)

500 to 1000 ????   on a good day with a good road that even cars could drive on might fetch up to 10000...  why not I say ?  the lake is huge with an even larger population of fish.. As I sit here at home unable to access the big lake I would gladly pay a fee for a plowed road and Im sure Im not alone. The resourse is for everyone.

I don't know why you've decided to label MFF Ron.  Those people work harder than any other outdoor forum administrator and moderators that I've known.  They do an awesome job of trying to separate the wheat from the chaff.

You have a lot to offer so I'm sure that you've never been given a listening to.  :)

What is it that makes you worry MP?
If someone takes every post seriously on these sites they're nuts! Everybody has an opinion and they're welcome to it, doesn't mean everyone has to agree with it! If one chooses to post pics or info on the internet your gonna get some criticism like it or not. And for the guys saying people post out of jealousy...maybe some do, but im betting most don't.
MP ill give you all the kudos, cause you do catch big fish, and im sure glad you didn't take my post above too seriously! ;D

No fight here. In my opinion the guy got responses cause he got a tip from a guy and right away posted it on the internet for all to see...i know i wouldn't be impressed if someone did that to me!!
If guys really want to think that you just launch at creek hit the lake drill a hole and theres walleye jumping out of the holes theyre sadly mistaken. Guys are still travelling miles out onto the lake in all directions from there. Its no different than chalet or balsom, except that it used to be a quiet road....not anymore!! And as Gatorhunter posted, if u don't like mud, don't bother going cause in a day or two thats what the trail will be!
Btw....i got skunked today! And that info u should believe!  ;D
