ice,chalet beach
« on: Jan 28, 2011, 04:53 PM »
Hello everybody!
Is one of you who could tell me if i need an extension for my power auger on Lake Winnipeg ?
And how is the fishing by Chalet beach?
I heard few guys fishing on the east side, they told me that they caught a few green back last weekend but i still haven't heard anything about chalet beach.
I would be thank full if someone could answer to my questions.
Thank you everybody for all of your comments.

In some spots  youll need an extension, but in others, you wont.
The ice ice thicker in some places than others.

Drilled with no extension yesterday at Balsam. Was right down to the powerhead. Have to be carful not to suck snow and ice into the carb. Had my extension in the truck in case as it is extension time. :)

Hi Guys
Was anyone fishing out at CBR today. Tried to get out there but found the hiways slippery early this morning.
What is the best bait to use on LW. We have tried live and salted minnows with not much luck.
Will try again next week.

Drilled on the lake today and as previous posts, almost maxed on the jiffy! Got to be careful when drilling that tight to the head. Intake is directly on the bottom and if you don't time it proper when you break through it could suck in! Hot motor + cold water = scored piston!

Th 8 would be tough, 6 a lot easyer. Still, with three feet of hard ice your in for a workout! Old school ice fishing :)

Great!! LOL.....if I get hooked on ice fishing....ill pick up a power auger next season.  What are you all driving on the ice?  I know they are 4x4's but what kind?  Just trying to gauge if my Ram will make it through the snow.

fished lots of different spots today at Balsam and we didn't need any extensions, worst case shovel the foot of snow out of the way first and you're good to go

A Ram wont make it, but a GMC will ;)

try a chubby darter or a live target

try tipping your lures with minnow heads

heard good things about fish eyes but have never used them

about using a hand auger on Chalet.  Yeah you will make it, but not in all spots.  I love people that doubt the old hand auger.  They work great when sharp and if you two people you can either take turns or even put your hands on top of each outer and double auger it and really power through double time.  You would have hole drilled by the time it take another guy to gas up, warm up and drill.  That said I love my new strikemaster- 3 foot of ice killed in less than 30 seconds.  I do miss the sweat of the manual, good for the lungs and pipes.

Yup. I hook the minnow lightly through the flesh just under the dorsal fin. They struggle giving movement which is walleye death at times. Last time I was out they would not even look at live though. Chubby darter caught the only fish. :)

No I don't, I just hook a salty minnow or sometimes just the top half (with the eyes).
