Title: Keyhole Hut party
Post by: Special on Nov 30, 2012, 12:25 PM
Come one come all to our first Hutparty of the season. This is a social event for fisherman and their families. BBQ, Tactics, Bragging rights and Fun. Stop by on January 12th and the 13th 2013. Meet and greet your local fisherman of Wyoming.  Find new fishing buddies learn Keyholes "deadsea tactics" from locals. I will be giving further instructions on to were the base camp will be located. Got to get out on the ice to see were the fish are bitting first.  ;D

If you have any suggestions for the event please don't be afraid to speak up this is our first run at this and I would like to make it fun.

A gal I work with raises "State Certified" minnows on her place in Gillette, but she cannot sell them retail. She supplies Ace Hdwe in Gillette for one, I'm not certain where else she sells to. Saw her earlier this morning, if I run into her again I'll ask her about them for you.

Post by: jasonfishn on Dec 04, 2012, 03:24 PM
That would be a good deal wyo I like to buy minnows that are kept outside so they are acclimated to the cold. Them ones from ace die in ten min of bein in the cold most of the time thats why I really like Roosters in Rapid when we go to pactola instead of cabelas or scheels

Jed, sounds good to me. I  caught a nice Smallie from Bear Claw saturday jigging, and a handful of perch. No size. Been hearing lots of Pike being caught...i'll be ready this year...more quick strike rigs and bigger spoons. See you out there!

Fished with a good friend after working nights Monday. Fished for about 4 hours and landed 30 eyes, a few of everything else. Fishing plastics and spoons. Bait was to slow! Water holding at 38 degrees.

We might actually get ice to hold this party. Common we need a good couple of inches. If we have less than 5 inches I think we should hold it on dry land just for safty reasons.

well reports coming off the lake tonight are good for ice fishing not good for duck hunting lol, I was told that the whole west end is froze up and is holding a dusting of snow on top of the ice. we might be able to pull off the hut party. Special where were you thinking about having the central spot at?
Title: Re: Keyhole Hut party
Post by: Special on Dec 11, 2012, 01:28 AM
Good question, I was thinking pinehaven side which has, Hotels, food, baitshop, ect. Mulecreek or Windcreek just depends on were the fish are bitting. I will favor Windcreek due to close access to ice and land and parking, campsite close enough to the ice that we could use as a Firepit. An area I'm thinking gives us access to a bathroom that is close, Also we can pull our campers down there and if anyone from out of the area would like to bunk up and do some weekend fishing we could have a howl of a time around a campfire if we are not fishing! :-\  But lets do some fishing to see if the bite is better on the other side.  ??? :icefish: The only concern is how slick will that hill be. I've had a few close ones in my truck coming down and trying to get back out. If not Windcreek we do Mulecreek up around the parking area on top of the boat ramp. I drawing a blank is there a shelter on top? Or on the road past the bathroom area. Close to the ice/water.

If anyone can think of a better place I'm all ears.

Hey I was also contemplating on having a little meeting before this shindig. See who all want to participate/help. Just get organized alittle, come up with some kind of plan. If we pull this off it could become a tradition like the boysen boys. I was thinking around the weekend of the 29th and 30th out on the ice or at coffee shop/pub. PM me please if you want a meeting or if you can contribute something post it on this tread so we don't copy someones elses donation. I'll start making a list/plan. Thanks Special

Still a MARINE. ERR Devil Dogs eeraa.  I can set up any kind of tent. What ya got.  Appleye made a good point that if we put a couple of campers in a circle to keep the W off our backs that would work also. What size is the tent?

Post by: jasonfishn on Dec 21, 2012, 07:50 AM
We put up a 20x60 army tent for elk hunting once it has 3 stoves in it and from what I remember it took like 2 hours by the time we shoveled the snow away and layed it out but once the corners were staked and some on the side 3 guys went inside and stood up the poles and then we staked the rest AND then we dank beers lol

We had six folks in our group at the Pine Haven super club on Christmas day & the buffet was pretty damn good.   If folks could let me know how many are looking at the Sunday buffet on the 13th....The staff would like to have some kind of a count as to how many are going to be there....the food is pretty good and it will give the folks who have to travel a chance for a good meal and a place to warm up if need be before they head home.

If you plan on attending the Sunday buffet let me know....

I will get it started   TEAM LIGHTNING RSVPing for the Sunday Buffet for TWO People.

Most know the Empire Guesthouse usually has minnows. Are's are kept outside and keep well. We also finally got in wax and meal worms, spikes and nightcrawlers. We should have a good stock of PK Lures by the end of the week. For the hut party we will be giving away some prizes to ice shanty members, when you make a purchase during  the hut party you can register for fishing poles, tipups, etc.
Wish I could attend, but have to work weekends. Roxan has been doing a great job running this place by herself.

If you take any pictures during the hut party and would maybe like to see them on a calender let us know at the Empire Guesthouse. We are planning on putting out a 2014 calender. The calender will have a different theme each month and January will be ice fishing month with ice shanty being the focus. Email pictures to [email protected] and be sure to tag pictures with your name so you get credit for it. I would also like to use some of your pictures in newspaper articles with your ok. Calender pages will be done like a collage so we can put several pictures per page.

Meet and greet your local fisherman of Wyoming.  Find new fishing buddies learn Keyholes "deadsea tactics" from locals. Meet in Mulecreek bay or as some of us call it Pinehaven boat ramp.

If anyone has questions please post them and suggestions are welcome.

Saturday 12th of January 2013

8am Meet and greet your fishing group. After discussion we decided it would be better off to skip the challenges and get in groups that want to target species of fish. Example perch, walleye, Pike, bass and fun. Also we are trying to rig up some sleds that could transport fisherman to locations across the ice. If not there is going to be groups fishing off both points and in mulecreek easy walking distance. Also if you purchase a item at empire they are doing a drawing for shanty members. They will have plenty of minnows. They also have a nice selection on PKs and icefishing tackle. Might want to stop in a take a look good prices.

11:30 - 12:30 BBQ Jason BBQ is hot and ready. Yum Yum is the bomb. It will be on Mulecreek bay. It might be on the ice in the bay or on the point down from the restroom. Donations for food will be appreciated. Please post if bring a food dish. We could use some Buns for hamburgers, hotdogs, a couple bags of chips. ALSO BRING YOUR OWN DRINK.

1pm  Meet your new fishing group. If you decide to stay with what your doing no biggy or want to join the hunt for a new species all the better. Its up to you. I'm going to do some walleye trolling and see if they do exists. Drill drill drill and move find the active fish.

6:00pmish Burger and a Beer at R's place. Join the group or head for home your choice. A couple of us are spending the night out on keyhole with our campers. Empire, is giving specials $25 night for RV hook ups Showers and Power are available no water. Also they have a couple cabins available that weekend. $65 a night. Give Empire a call @ (307) 670-0428 . to reserve a spot if you want to stay at empire. I plan on camping in windcreek campground area.

Sunday 13th

8am meet your group. Try new spot off grid. Suggestions welcomed.

11am Send off or stay on. Your choice. There is a great little Brunch done by the Pinehaven restrant club. Good food. 12pm at the superclub for all RSVPs in pinehaven they are ready for us to chow down some good food.  ;D

See you next year!    :roflmao: :icefish:

She said go a head and keep the new number up, as main number.  Just incase you cann't reach anyone on that number you can also use the other number (307) 756-3454 Empire Guest House pine haven

Sure wish I could be there, sounds like it's gonna be a great time, but unfortunately Laramie is quite some distance from Keyhole!

Anyone want to carpool from the Bighorn basin? I would love to be there if gas money wasn't so tight.

Ok everyone I need opinions quickly. We finally got a descent weather report and looks like 6 inches of snow and well in the negatives this weekend. I've been asked by many to push it back. (Kids, equipment ect.) What say you RSVPers should we push or brave the cold and snowy roads.

Hey guys this cancellation is mostly due to the kids and wives and my cooker not cookin to good in hi winds and cold. I talked it over with Special and with so many that were planning on having the kids along including myself the cold -25 WS temps isnt a good idea to take any chances. Sorry for the short notice guys but when we decide on a date or if anyone has some dates let us know. My only weekend next month is the 9-10th and the next weekend will be in March on the 9-10th as well.

Ok after a few phone calls. We are still a go. Just no BBQ at noon due to the cold and wind. We are arranging the BBQ for a later date. So we are still meeting at 8am at mulecreek. Also everyone still wants to do the pinehaven superclubs brunch on Sunday.

We are die hard fisherman and will not let mother nature tell us we can't fish. LOL  ;)

The National Weather Service has included Campbell County in their Winter Storm Advisory...and they are projecting 6 inches of snow in Gillette by the time it's all over mid-day Saturday. We are on the southwest edge of the bulge coming from the north, and they are still saying the storm track is in flux so a slight shift in direction could either increase the impact on us, or decrease how much we get.

Snow is expected to start in the Gillette area by late Thursday afternoon, (around dark)...and by daybreak Friday morning, we should have about 1 inch on the ground.
During the day Friday will be the heavy dump if projections hold up...looking for another 4 inches by Friday evening, and snow continuing through the night for another inch, leaving a storm total at 11 a.m. Saturday of 6.1 inches.

Winds will be a bit of a problem with this storm...looking for them to be steady at 18-22 mph Friday, gusting to 31...that's enough to cause some drifting. Saturday will see winds closer to 13 mph, gusting to 16.
The real story will be a return to single digits on the thermometer. Friday and Saturday will be in the 0-9 degree range, with -10 to -20 wind chill. And, the cold temps will hang on thru Sunday into Monday...so it's January and it's winter in Wyoming!

Ya,  i seen it blow out.  BUT......  It got demolished as it got ran over by the time i got back to it.  guess it must have slid around with the snow in the back enough that the wind was able to catch it and BYE BYE SHANTY...  :(   First time i ever lost anything like that.  Live and learn i guess.  It was one of those suitcase style shelters so its trash now. New one is in the back seat now  lol

I managed 25 plus perch, two broken rods and a broken chair. We know why it was a hut part because you needed a hut. It was cold. Some of the other guys caught a mess of perch, small mouth and a couple of little eyes. Did I mention in was cold?

appleye was it cold out there today! I can only imagine, very tough conditions. I am becoming more of a fair weathered fisherman, not that I can't handle the weather but it can just limit your effectiveness and your mobility. Years ago when we used to fish Ft Peck a few times every winter we used to gage the trip on how much stuff we didn't tear up. Are you guys going out tomorrow?

So what was the shanty count today? How did the shotgun start turn out? Where was the best location? How were the burgers and brews at R Place? You know, the basic questions we are all wondering about.  ??? @) :o ;D
Title: Re: Keyhole Hut party
Post by: mittenclamman on Jan 13, 2013, 09:16 AM
I'd say there was roughly 8-10 groups there for the shotgun start. It was a cold bitter day and appleye hit it dead on it as a cold hard day to fish. I can honestly say it was more quality over quantity, but it seemed like good times were had by all.

Outdreye and I had burgers and a couple cocktails at R place. First rate food and company. We got to watch the double OT and the start of the other game and warm up a bit. Good times. Wish the weather had cooperated it would have been a lot more fun to get to know a few more people and visit and BBQ. Breaking stuff, that's why I have back ups for the back up nothing new there. Still had a good time. Getting ready to go have lunch (11:30 to 1:00 PM). Thinking about running out again but it's still COLD! I just got everything dried out. I guess I'm ready?  ;D

I had a great time will be in contactto come up again was going to go out this morning but my auger needs a little TLC. I just want to thank everyone again even though I didn't catch anything I need to stop focusing on walleye and fish for whatever is bitting or under my hole. The bugger were great almost couldn't eat it all.  I highly recommend the Empire if you need a place to stay very clean and great hospitality looking toward to my next trip I learned alot.

Today was far nicer out than yesterday.  Tried my luck at coulter bay with no luck.  Seen a few catching small perch but no such luck for me.  I did try wind creek as well and iced 3 there.  Was pretty slushy at coulter bay.  Almost got the snowmobile stuck.

HAHA funny you should say that Cargo we have been fishin Peck for quite a few years and we kinda did the same thing if you came back with stuff lost broke or wet it was a hard good time lol seemed like we always broke a wheeler and a few rods lost some tipups  and rode into a water hole somewhere but over the past few years I have built a system on our wheelers that keeps all that from happening and I havent rode into any open water for a few years

jasonfishn you know exactly what I am talking about you have been there done that's cool :clap

Story: About tearing stuff up at Peck. We had unloaded around the Pines and went to Bonetrail to fish for Big Pike. We happen to see a lone coyote out in the middle of the ice, two guys took off on wheelers to run him over in the chase process they were zig zagging back in forth as the coyote was making some good moves and the two guys on there wheelers were not watching each other and collided tearing the whole front tire assembly off one of the wheelers I guess you would say the coyote won that contest. luckily no one was hurt.

Hey guys, I did win the Pole from Empire.  I totally forgot about the hut part thing until MrsSmith asked if I was a member of iceshanty when I was buying bait.  SHe entered me into a raffle and called me while I was out fishing.  A nice rod, thanks to Empire and anyone else. I fish keyhole all the time and haven't met any of you other keyholers yet, guess I'm shy or something.  I'll be out there for the Derby, headed to Tongue River Res this weekend for a three day trip.
