depends on how deep the water is also. I was on 3" of ice that was pretty crusty and cracked with every step. I wasn't worried cuz I knew the water was only 3 ft deep. I've also been on 4-5" of black ice and felt fine with my buddies around. But I also know that each one of those guys knows what to do if someone goes in and would be there in an instant. It's when I'm alone that I am extra careful. Good thing I don't like fishing alone. :icefish: :icefish: :icefish: :icefish:

Love that early black ice at just > 2 inches !  Many a hot bite has happened in that circumstance  ;D
