Tip ups and perch
« on: Feb 16, 2012, 08:17 AM »
Well , NEVER fished for perch with tip ups, a buddy I talked to filled me in on a little secret about some jumbo perch being caught in a local lake and he told me where and that he was using tip ups.  Well I never asked him about set up, so  I plan on putting 8lb ice fishing line on my tip up, maybe a 2 foot leader to a small hook and maybe a foot above it put a split shot, hook the minnow near the back ?

Is this basically what some of you guys do ?

I catch perch on tip ups all the time, just run your regular tip up line with a leader ( i use 12 pound flouro as my all around leader) then pput on a hook on 8 pound flouro snell.  If your tip up has a spring to control the spool then make sure it's not so tight as to keep perch from setting it off, though if they are big enough it probably won't matter, I only tighten the spring to keep big bait from turning the spool and setting off the trap.  But I've used everything from shiners, worms to perch eyes and caught them on tip ups.

That is my favorite past time is tip ups for perch.    If there are northern pike   around you will catch some of those also so I use regular tip up braided line with a 12 to 17 pound mono leader.   I use #4 half circle and ruby reds or shiners for bait

Pretty much.  I use 6lb leader to a size 6 kahle hook, large Rosy or Fathead hooked through the lips.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.
