Best pike jig
« on: Jan 23, 2013, 09:13 AM »
Just wondering from everyone what their favorite way for jigging pike is.  I use a simple lead head jig with mister twister tail and minnow but feel like there are probably better tactics out there.

I use a battered silver spoon that I had a friend tie a skirt to that glows and then I add a minnow head and partial body to it. They look like this except the skirt glows:

My favorite and most consistent lure is the Rapala Clackin' Rap 06 in Silver I use for both open water and through the ice!

I've had decent success with smaller, brightly colored airplane jigs

You might try a weighted 'bunny bugger' fly.  I have seen it work wonders.

3/8 rainbow buckshot with a smelt head, or a rattle trap/clackin rap.

yesterday went out and hooked a 12-13lb. pike on a northland buckshot with 2 perch eyeballs on it!  the fish got off at the hole after 10 min. but was still really exciting on 4 lb. line!  Also caught othern pike and lakers on this setup.

Big buckshot loaded with cut bait. Most my pike usually come on tip ups or dead sticks though, plain old treble with a hunk of cut bait. But then again I usually fish for pike on the west side.
A bad day fishing is better than a good day working.
