Pack Basket Care??
« on: Dec 26, 2002, 05:14 AM »
Have a nice new pack basket for all my traps....any suggestions on care and preservation of the woven pack?  Varnish, Thompsons' water seal, paint?  I'd like to read a few suggestions from some of you with "old" baskets still in service.  Thanks, tight lines, Hoppes

Hoppes,I've had my trap basket for 33 yrs.now.All I ever did was seal it with tung oil. She's a little worn but holding up fine. But I also bought one of those fancy basket liners from Beans up there in Freeport.Momma has started decorating our den in old fishing memorabilia and every now and then I'll find my basket in there with cattails in it.I have to remind her that this basket has'nt been retired yet.I suppose when I pass on that women will have me stuffed and put in that den! ;)

You both are making me lean towards an oil product instead of varnish or paint.  I like the look of wood grain anyway.  Thanks for the advice....Hoppes

try a can of sprayable polyeurethane.  protects the wood and lets the natural grain show thru.

My wife keeps telling me if it's good enough for our deck, Thompsons' water sealant is good enough for my pack basket.  (Plus I have a couple gallons left over from doing the deck this summer)  I may have to give that a try.  Will she say "I told you so" for the rest of my ice fishing career?   ;)

Hoppes-

Nope, I've given my baskets a coating of Thompson's each year & they seem to weather the winter on the ice (& the summer in the damp cellar) just fine.  I had one that came out a nice honey/amber shade after the Thompson's dried.  Looked wicked sharp.

Put the deck seal to it & don't look back.

I was told years ago by a person that made pack baskets to use nothing but boiled linseed oil on them. It is supposed to keep the material from drying out and cracking. Of coarse this was after I had put a nice coat of polyeurathne on it. That was about 15 years ago and it is holding up just fine.

Wow, thanks for the information all.  I just moved my five gallon can of Thompsons' inside to warm up till tomorrow.  Think I will post the results when I'm finished.  Probably are several ways to protect the basket from what you all are saying.  Good to have a "PACK BASKET SUPPORT GROUP".

Marine Spar Varnish. 2 coates. Stays flexible and doesn't yellow. Stains also wipe off.
