Northern Pike
« on: Jan 06, 2011, 06:02 AM »
Hey guys,   I know its pretty early in the year, but I was wondering if anyone specifically targets pike on Lake Winnipeg or Lake Manitoba?  I love fishing pike with tip ups on late ice.  I have fished Buffalo Bay many times and done well, but I am looking for a change of pace.

If you do fish for them, do you have any general tips or locations you could recomend?  Im not looking for your GPS coordinates or anything, just looking for some basic information.

Also anyone fish pike on Shoal Lake (Ontario)?  Any tips or suggestions there?

Thanks for any info you can give me!

I have caught 2 northerns this year at chalet. One was around 12 lb the other about 6lb. I go to Big whiteshell a couple times during the ice fishing season for pike. Lots of big ones in there.

You can walk straight out from the launch and fish 50 yrds infront of the boat docks and catch them there. People fish off the dock there all summer and hammer northerns and walleys like crazy. I seen people on the dock catch more than guys coming back in boats.

People are always targeting walleye but pike are a lot tastier to eat.

They are good but not as good as a Walleye. Especially I find in late summer (July) taste not as nice as a Wallie. Burbot (recently tried) is bloody tasty.   Peeled the skin like taking off Pajama's roll in flour, garlic salt batter and fry. That is how It was served for me and it was great!!   Unreal good!!. My buddy Johnnie is a full blooded Cree and he showed me the light.    Miigwetch my friend.  :)

The "slough" at the float plane base was great for gators a couple seasons ago. Havn't tried there this year yet but seen others fishing in there.  The first time we fished there we were using jig and minnows and caught a few....some older gentleman came over and told us the trick was big smelts like most people know to use for pike. At that time we didn't. So the next time we went we brought smelts and we did allot better. Some huge pike in that river, buddy caught a 41 incher a couple seasons back while we were jigging for walleyes out of the boat. Real nice fish forsure.

Ive caught 4 Master angler Pike this season alone, and I go to Netley Creek to catch em!
You can try the mouth of the creek at EOM too, but in the creek is great.
I use a Smelt on a Quickstrike rig and when im jigging I just use a fireball with a minnow.
I caught a 54'' at the mouth of Netley at EOM on Saturday.
Good luck,

PFB ;)

54"????????? I'd love to see a pic of that. Heck, the 49" too. But ONLY with a tape beside it. Otherwise, someone either needs a new tape or learn how to measure.

Wow. Well then you're in the top 5 in the history of reported MB pike. In which case you really want a good measurement picture to prove it for the record.

Set up a Photobucket.com account and upload them there. Then you can paste the links on here. It's free, and then you have your pics online to share anywhere you want.

Not trying to be too harsh but i will only believe the sizing when i see some pictures of even one of these fish.Given the location mentioned anything around the 40" mark would not surprise me but a 54" Pike would be amazing if it shows up here

Big Whiteshell is awesome for pike in the winter, smaller up to 10 lbs in the colder months but come march...... fish the shallows (10 feet) and tip ups with big bait and you will score.

what type of phone do you have? If you can't get them off your phone and onto your computer, try and send them is a text messege to someone with a iphone. Then that person can e-mail the pics to your computer. I have had to do this in the past with my phone. It works.
