Title: Burbot question.
Post by: emtorn on Feb 01, 2015, 03:35 AM
So, burbut isn't generally a popular targeted fish in NY. Some guys on the lake I fish swear by them. So I'm open to new things and happened on a couple nice ones the other day. Found a vid on how to clean, etc.
my question is......what's their general pattern? If I found them on a flat near a drop off in about 15' .....what are my chances of finding them in that same area next week? Do they roam or generally hold to an area?

Here in Upper Michigan they live most their life in deeper water and don't roam too far until spawn season. Around here they spawn in late Feb and early March. They spawn in shallow water, usually less than 6 ft. Early Feb they start migrating towards the shallows and are caught at various depths as they transition to the shallows. Low light conditions are best but I have caught them at all times of the day. If there are schools of perch nearby they will hang around them on their way to the shallows.
