Got out on the hard deck last Saturday and I can't believe I beat my record from last year (Nov 9) by a week. We headed out thinking we would have just enough time to get to Kamas before 1st light and it was timed perfect. 1st light came in as we were heading out of town and we did get to see a couple deer but the higher we climbed the less animals we seen. Plenty of hunters out and about packing the roads down. It took a little longer to get to the lake we had been scoping out for a few years now and it couldn't have came together any better. We were able to get with 50yds or so from the ice and it wasn't a bad hike at all. Air temp was 4 degrees at arrival and 37 degrees when we left. Ice was anywhere from 2- 4in. We stayed in the more shaded areas of the lake as that was where the thickest ice was. I was finally able to knock 2 fish off my bucket list by catching 6 goldens and 5 brooks :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :woot: :woot: Here's some fish porn for you guys that like colorful small fish, the first 3 pics was the most colorful and shaped golden I got, forked tail and all. Everything was returned to fight another day

These drone shots turned out real well for how the ice formed, very unusual sight for sure but this is the 1st year any of us have seen things from above like this. In the 2nd pic the 3 little dots at the bottom/middle of the pic are 3 of the group and to the far left is the other 2. Very cool pic, kinda like the crop circles of the ice.

Great post and a great day for sure! Golden trout are definitely a rare thing in these parts.

Muskyon46 thank you for posting the photos from your trip. Congratulations on catching the golden and brook trout. :clap: :clap: Curious how well did the improvised ic cleats/creepers work.

Thanks, He still moved very slow and only slipped once which I believe he was still feeling today. Claimed the traction was better.

Looks like the fish are fairly fat, so that's a good thing for the high mountain lakes... Bunch of purdy fish, like the colors... J

Ya the pine tree cleats help but are not perfect. I was doing the truffle shuffle all day.

Thanks Jeff, they were in good shape. Not big headed or anything like that. Now its time to get the Grayling knocked off the list maybe next weekend :-\

Not a problem mr.clean, I doubt the cleats will be forgot again but if they do there's always a way to improvise.

I hear ya slayer, I would have rather have some weight to them also but for 1st ice that's all we can get here for now and yes I was very impressed with them little things colors also. They DNR did start planting tigermusky in the lakes that are getting to overpopulated with big headed brookies, so in a few years a big fish from a small high mountain lake might be on the bucket list. I just hope they survive in those conditions. I know pike and musky have no problems with the cold frozen waters but the food supply could run short real quick with those eating machines
