Marriage between a permy and a dropdown frame
« on: Jul 15, 2019, 11:52 AM »
I have a permanent shack that is well built and i like a lot but i dont like dragging off and on my trailer. I built a dropdown frame and hope that it works out with the permy. We’ll see...

Here’s some pics hopefully.  It’s mostly done on the outside.

The shanty base was 2x6 construction with the side “skis” being made of 2x12s. I cut the the entire underside frame down to 2x4 with a circular saw. I then drug it onto the dropdown frame and drilled through the floor and 2x4 frame with a 6” long drill bit and anchored it with some 5” long self tapping 1/4” trailer deck bolts. Used about 40 of them and seems to be working well. It weighs about 3/4 ton and the tongue weight is really heavy so it probably wont be pulled by a snow mobile or atv, but it’s built to last. We’ll see.

Door placement kinda screwed you for the wheel placement. Looks pretty good though.  Be cool to see some inside pics.

Just a thought for you, but if you wanted to pull the shack out with the wheeler.......I think you could. Just take your wheel jack, and keep it down while driving slow and it should take enough Weight off for you to pull the shack out.

Or just go on Amazon and get a dolly to pull it out.

Yeah. The inside hole locations dictated where the door went. I have seen the trailer dollies for in between an ATV and shanty and they seem really effective. But, i dont have a snow mobile or ATV so it doesn’t matter at this point!😁

The drop tongue will help a lot for your heavy hitch weight. Nice looking shack.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Thanks Ice Dawg. The inside is full of catch covers. My son put down truck bed liner on the floor in the shack. Not sure if I'm a fan of it. At least the floor is more waterproof. I have some smaller 12 volt lights for lighting and will prolly beef that up with some stronger rv lights.  I originally built the shanty to fit on my 6x10 trailer and wish I would’ve built a dropdown shanty from the get-go.  I would have built it big enough to sleep in. My sons used to camp in it but now they’re taller than me and it doesn’t work so well. Should be fun this hard-ice season!

I ended up building a “portable” 12 volt dc power pack for powering up the lights and electronics. I put a couple of 12 volt 35 amp/hr agm batteries in a tool box and used panel mounted cig lighter sockets, usb ports along with powerpole plugs. Should have plenty of power for everyone with the need. I can trickle charge through the powerpole plugs for now, but have a solar panel and controller waiting to be mounted for an automated charging solution.  Oh yeah, wired in a 1000 watt inverter for any 120 volt ac needs.
