Not another fish finder thread...
« on: Jan 21, 2018, 04:04 PM »
This is a two-part summer/winter setup question.

Problem #1 - I have Lowrance Elite 7Ti on my boat and really like it. The one problem is that I need to add a monitor or another locator to the bow of the boat to use while trolling.

Problem #2 - I need a locator for the ice but I would like to be able to use data I get year round.

Would I be better off getting another Lorance with an ice transducer and linking them during the summer or getting a flasher for winter and a monitor/tablet to mirror my locator to the bow of the boat?

An iceducer is not a necessity. There are various ways(posted) to rig an open water Xducer so it hangs properly.

If you need another unit anyways depends on how much you wanna spend. You could just get the hook 5 ice pack and transfer mapping chip if they're compatible. If you can afford a little more buy the elite 5 ti and portable ice pack. Or go all out and get another elite 7 ti or elite9 ti for your boat and put the 7 in an ice pack. Depends on how much you wanna spend. I'm pretty sure you can fit a 7 in the ice pack

Thanks for the replies!

I decided to install a tablet at the bow and mirror the Lowrance to the tablet. For ice, I just pulled the trigger on a Vexilar FLX-28.

Sure, I lose the mapping ability on the ice but with so many people using flashers to ice fish, I am guessing there is an alternative solution. For now, I'll stick to the old school maps and pop holes till I find the fish. :-)

I don't see much need of maps for ice. I just print out a chunk of Navionics for the area I'll be fishing if I have not been there before. As they say 'it ain't rocket science'.

A GPS is nice because it has the maps that you print out AND it tells you exactly where you are on said map. Precision matters when you're fishing isolated structure.

My Marcum VX-1 is going strong on its 3rd season, how could it not be covered by warranty if you only used it 3 times?

The only time it really matters to me is when I am fishing flooded timber, just saves drilling a few holes

Another option is to get a Lowrance ice bag kit. It comes with a bag, battery, ice transducer and cables. It is only $150 and with a small mod (took 1 minute, cut 2 pieces of plastic) fits my hook 7 so the elite 7 should fit as well. Like figure ate said, the gps makes it nice and easy to find  your honey hole or that piece of structure. It also has saved me on more than one occasion from having to wait out a blizzard/white out on the ice. Finally, with the bag you can also use it on kayaks, paddle boards etc.

Don't want to derail the thread but that is a lot different than saying it isn't covered under warranty.  Weird you can't get in touch with them though that isn't right.

I purchased the Vexilar FLX-28, so the original reason for the post has been resolved... derail away.  ;D
