is a tow bar worth the $?
« on: Dec 20, 2015, 03:22 PM »
I have an Eskimo 2man flipover or a 1man frabill flipover to pull behind my new to me snowmobile.

Are the tow bars really worth the ~$50?  Or can i just use a rope, which is free?

My other dillemma is to see if im able to buy 1 tow bar yet fit both flipover!?

Perhaps a universal tow bar is the way to go?

I could always fab a 2nd sled mount so i only need to buy 1 tow bar hopefully.

If you have eye bolts on both sleds you can attach the tow bar to either one with Carabiner clips..
Or get a length of Metal Emt  8‑Ft Conduit , cut in half, flatten and drill holes in all ends and attach with carabiner clips...   Bet you can make one for under $15... ;)

I would take a look at the shappell universal tow bar.pretty cheap and would get the job done.im in the same boat and pull by hand more often than not but have a snowmobile this year so might get a tow bar.or use rope inside some pvc pipes.

I've seen people use small diameter pvc with rope through it. I'd just spend the $50, before your shacks end up under your snosled.
It must be something in the water.

I removed a folding lawn mower handle  and mounted it to my nanook 2 man
I made it removable so i could store it in the nanook  it works for hand pulling or pushing also
i installed a spring loaded hitch to the handle that will fit my snowmobile that works excellant

A tow device is definitely worth the effort. If home made or purchased. Too many time have had my shanty pass me or ram my rear on my wheeler.

From experience I can say that the PVC and rope ideal sucks.

Got about $30 into my setup.
I have since upgraded the mounts on the sled by sandwiching the plastic between 2 sheets of aluminium as the fender washers did not spread over a large enough area.

I just purchased the Otter tow bar and am impressed with how heavy duty it seems.  There's no chance I'll be bending that with normal use.  I thought it was worth the 50 rather than the aggravation of trying to build one.  I'm not very crafty and I figure the $50 is worth my aggravation
