I just purchased the Jiffy 3hp 10 inch.  Last year I was useing an 8 inch with tipups and had 5 of 6 spools freeze into the side of the hole.  Almost impossible to chip out.  I broke 5 of the plastic spools.  These tipups were set out all day in about +10 degree temps.  Since the 8 inch holes lost about 2 inches during the day due to refreezing and that there are 40+ pound pike in these waters,  it is the 10 inch for me.

Give a man a fish,  he eats for a day.
Teach a man to fish,  he sits all day on the ice drinking beer.

I fish perch only, 7" Jiffy power & a 5" Mora hand. Never had to worry about not getting a big one through the hole because they usually don't stay on 1lb or 2lb test anyway.

I use a 12X12X1/2" Black foam pad that I slip over the shaft of the tip-up on windy days (keeps blowing snow out) and when below freezing. This insulates the water from the air and day or night keeps refreeze to a minimum. I don't need the bigger augers then.
I have heard of guys using fish oil in the hole so there is no refreeze and it gives your bait that fresh fish smell.

8" Jiffy... works great most of the time.  Bought an manual 8" Eskimo Barracuda for backup, maybe it was defective but out of the box it couldn't cut through butter.  Anybody have any suggestions for a manual backup?

10 only because it was on sale at the time.  I would have gone with an 8 which I've always had on my hand auger and has worked perfect.

Make sure the blades are not on upside down. I had a buddy w/ that problem.

6" fin-bore. I fish for perch mostly so this is plenty big enough. I would not use a 4" because I catch perch that would not fit through that hole. I've also seen people have problems getting crappie out of 4" holes.

I have been hunting or fishing almost everyday of my life. The rest have been wasted.

We fish with a 10" power. Helps when you have to pull on an angle to get the fish out without scraping the sides. Like others have said, when it is very cold out the hole freeze smaller faster than you can clean it. The extra inches helps.

p.s. Mods can you set up a poll for us in this post? I'm guessing Airs24 didn't know how. It would be very helpful. Something like this:

What is your most used sized/type auger?
4" and smaller - manual
5" - manual
6" - manual
7" - manual
8" - manual
9" - manual
10" - manual (I go to the gym)
11" - manual (I'm the Hulk)
12" and bigger - manual (I'm Superman)
5" and smaller - power (I have a bad back)
6" - power
7" - power
8" - power
9" - power
10" - power
11" - power
12" - power
13" and bigger - power (I'm fishing for monsters)

"13" and bigger - power (I'm fishing for monsters)"

YIKES !!!

I think they call those Post Hole Diggers and you need to bring the tractor with the 3 point hitch & PTO to drill those. Or maybe you could get the guys from the phone company to stop by the lake when they're putting in new poles down the road.....
