Have two hand augers, a 5" lazer for panfish, and an 8" Lazer for Walleye fishing. Hardly ever set up for pike anymore. Haven't had enough ice in these parts the past few years to warrant draggin' a power auger around but I have an old Jiffy 8" in my garage somewhere.  ::)  ::)

I use a 10" Jiffy STX gas and  8" StrikeMaster Laser hand auger.  Right now on most lakes is Saskatchewan, there is 25" of ice...so the hand auger stays home, but it works great for early and end of the year.

I have only one auger and it's a 8" hand mora. Maybe not the best for all situations but gets me bye.
Maybe it's like the old hunting saying."Beware of the hunter with only one rifle, he probably knows how to use it."

Anything over 8" is totally unnecessary.

Disagree.  For pike, the bigger the hole the better especially with thick ice.  Easier to get the sucker up the hole and doesn't cut the fish as much if a bigger hole is used.
Just my opinion.

8" on both hand and power.   That seems to work pretty well for the fishing I do...  there's only been one or two times where I could've used a bigger hole, but still managed to land the fish

Eight inch on both the hand and the Jiffy Stealth augers. Although I will be looking for a six inch hand auger for next season.

8" hole is good enough for me. Don't need to drive a car in you know....

Even eminent chartered accountants are known, in their capacity as fishermen, blissfully to ignore differences between seven and ten inches, half a pound and two pounds, three fish and a dozen fish.

Strikemaster (Lazer) with exchangeable drills....8  and 10 inch

I bought the 10 inch drill shaft as I got tired of drilling 3 8's ie

or

Have got some lakers caught in a 8 inch hole. The whole head occupied the bottom of 8 inch hole and the fattness of the laker starting from head back couldn't even budge up hole. Estimated that one between 50-60 lbs but he is still swimming. No problem with 10 yet but have only had one year.

Yes we call them Mickey Mouse holes as well ;D
We do not drill these holes on lakes where others fish. Wouldn't want someone falling in and they are marked very well after were done with them. Alot of lakes I go to only see me and some buddies all winter. So I wouldn't reccomend where alot of other icefishers go.

So in answer to your question....auger size: 8 and 10, how big is your hole: varies

Just looking for a general consensus for future reference...

Cheers
8) I only fish panfish, I started with a sweet used 5" Mora then bought a 6" Strikemaster Laser Power auger.
Last year, got a 5" Laser hand auger and I love it.
I only use the power when over 16" ice. Just started using. 8)
