10"  I would be pissed if i had an 8" hole and hooked into a 30 lb northern..... better safe than sorry

After over 40 years I've settled in on a 5" for panfish. With my Lazer I can drill these all day without much fatigue. I go with a 6" - 7" when setting tip ups. Never had one on I couldn't pull through.

I agree that it is unnessesary to have anything bigger than an 8" if you are targeting anything other than northerns.  It is way easier to get a gaf in a big gator through a 10" hole

I have a 8 inch power auger, 8 inch hand auger, and 5 inch hand auger.

 I use a 9" jiffy , when we went to buy it we were going to get an 8 but 9's were on sale...bigger hole for less money

8" Jiffy power auger ,4 1/2 " Nils hand auger,have pulled a 16 pound northern thru the 8" no problem.

8" here, used to have a 12" gas auger that was my grndfathers.  Was great for tipups cause they didnt ice up as fast,just had to watch where you walked.But that one has been long gone
