Welcome to the site...and we have already had plenty of cold and plenty of ice...50cm of ice on lake, and I pulled out a 6.5 kg. laker (almost 14 lbs.)on Friday.  Glad to meet you...and hope that you keep it up.

yes i will.  I just had a scary moment in my trailer, my cat just walked by me with a weasel, in her month.  All white with a little black on the tip of the tail.  She got it in my trailer somewhere, and now, she dropped it and now my beagle is trying to find it.  oh no.

This sounds like a real adventure, Mempfree...let me know where the weasel ends up!!

oh, he ended up on my beagles nose, and then i heard all those yelping, and circles, and i finally got the weasel off of my dogs nose, and got it out doors.  what a rush.  put peroxide on her nose, and then some antibiotic.  she has her rabies shots.  haven't seen one of them in my place for years, when one of my old cats killed one.   :o

I live in the northeast part of the state.  About twenty miles south of the canadian border.  we have some ice, but not sure if anyone is driving on it yet.  surpose to get more snow tomorrow, as its been so mild here, for this time of the year.  i just replaced all of my lead egg sinkers on my tip-ups, with steel ones, as the state pasted a law, making them illegal, as they want to save the looms?  That is why i fish???  so the looms can eat all of them??  We are getting more and more city people here, who pass these idiot laws for the environmentalist, and its getting out of control.  Now all of the smaller lead sinkers are going to go into the local landfill near where i live, where most of vermonters trash goes now.  this landfill is located next to two rivers.  duh.  that is the state for you. >:(

I know the feeling...lead has been banned here for years, both in sinkers, in jigs, and in birdshot....guess I am just used to it.  I hardly ever use a tip up...regs here are two lines per person, or one tip-up and a line....I must run, though, perhaps I'll catch you tomorrow.  P.S.  Glad that the dog and the
can survived the weasel!!

well thank the lord thats all over will, now i can concentrate again.  we have five inches of snow right now, it started around 7am this morning, and now its kind of a mixture of sleet and snow.  snowmobilers will love this, as they haven
't been on the trail's yet this year.  surpose to be getting colder this week.  hopefully the ice will be safe enough to drive on.  we can fish with tipups here, and i think either six or eight per person, on the ice.  we have alot of lakes and ponds here in my state.  we usually use minnows and smelt.  i use the smelt on the tipups for trout.  minnow's for yellow perch.  usually in february it gets around 20 below zero, at least.  i still go fishing oh.  i have a portable clam shanty and i sit in my pickup truck, with my binoculars, and wait for the flags to go up.  what part of alberta, do you live in?  Is it flat lands, or mtns there?  we have some mtn's and hills here.

We are in the rolling country about halfway up the province on the border with Saskatchwan, so we have the best of both worlds....some
pretty large lakes here and to the north/north east...Cold Lake is about 22 km across (about 15 miles, I think)...it is the southern edge
of the boreal forests.  Lots of beauty up here.

My husband was raised in Quebec, and used to fish Vermont, New Hampshire, and parts of northern Maine...I've never been that far east.
And yep, those fools are lobbyists, and we have them here.  Which is why I try and live as far north as possible!!

no, but, the native americans, which are part of my family tree, are still fighting to keep this place free of communist, who are coming here in droves.  they don't give the natives any breaks, but they bring in every, tom, dick and harry, from where-ever, and we have to cloth, feed, and give them a job, and most of the people in the kingdom, have none, go figure?  I live near  lake memphamagog.  i fish it to.  Our part of the state is the poorest and most people have to travel to have a decent wage.  with the social idiot's, allowing all of this people in here, it is just getting worse for the native's here.  we pay high property taxes, and more now on our family hunting camp because of these idiot's.  social welfare they call it.  What i want here, is a good job, and if we need a casino, to do it, so do it.  Do it for the natives, not the outsiders.  My nephew, just told me, today, that they can't stop to get something to eat, at a store, after they play a high school baseball game now, because of the school admin, saying they are eating un healthy food?  what a bunch of bullcrap.  he likes to ice fish, and we go alot.

I'm ONE, and I'm from White Lake Michigan, I love to ice fish, for pike bluegill, but I love PERCH, there the best. :tipup:I was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, where the word Ice Fishing dosent mean anything, I moved to MI, and met a few good guys, who really took me in and showed me the way, now I just can't wait for the ice each year, but this year sucks, very late winter. 1 pd test rocks ;)

Glad to meet you, icefishinglady...and I do hope this latest cold front brings you some ice.  I am like you..if it is winter...I want enough
ice to drive on...
Had good luck with the lakers already this year...today I spent the day on two other lakes...early for perch, and got a respectable dozen..
and Sweetie and I each got a lovely fat walleye...and it was such a nice day to be out.  I am retired, and so is my fishing partner...
he and I spend at least four days a week on the ice.  I am also a granny, had six of my own, and now have three grandchildren...and
they all love ice fishing as well!!
What do you do when you aren't on the ice?

I have seen your impressive photo's, of lake trout from cold lake this year. I have one on the wall about 8pds, but dream one day, of catching one like yours.I'm a travel agent here in Michigan, and have traveled the world (almost) but I sure do love to ice fish, no kids, but my furry 4 legged friend, named Clyde, he's a Boxer that coon hunts and waterfoul hunts, last year he treed 20 coons. The largest 26pds. I also love to hunt Bear, Turkey, some ole mean Gaters.(use to live in Georgia) I'm a tomboy kinda, love the outdoors, golf, fish, snowmobile, (Can' ice skate) wounder why, haha.No ice here yet, but I have all of my ice fishing stuff by the back door. I also fish open waters for Trout, Walleye(the best) Salmon, Pike, Bass and Bluegill, Went to Aruba a couble of years ago and caught 3 Wahoo's, 51"s, and a 51" Mahi Mahi- boy was that great, I took it back to the hotel and had the Chef fix me 3 meals out of that, good eating.Got to go and eat a late dinner, chat with you soon. Nice talking with ya.

Memp -

Not to hi-jack a post, but did not the Native Americans generally live in communal (nay I go so far as communistic) societies?  Not to get into politics as the U.S. population currently is of course at tremendous levels compared to the pre-european colonization time, but I assume there are some (albeit on a highly different scale) similarities and goals with respect to the prosperization and progression of our community as a whole?  It sounds like you are somewhat distressed, but I have to assume at this point it is because of reasons other than the current political state overall - i.e. there most be some specific gripe?  You can't tell me it's OK to allow full social benefits to those whose families were born upon the grounds of this great land (or full sovereignty for that matter (foot in my mouth as I type), but NOT OK for those from other regions, especially those who have lived here and contributed for many many years? By the way, I'm a native American - I WAS BORN HERE.

Perhaps you should buy an island and start a country of your own where you can cater entirely to your own and allow no others the benefits of your territory.

Please - get out and do some ice fishing and CHILL OUT.  I understand your personal frustrations, but Sheesh - for the most part, especially on the icefishing community, we've all been there - you aren't the only one with hardships!!!!!!!!!

To the others, sorry for venting and distracting from a thread which highlights the intense enthusiasm and contributions of those often overlooked as important and influential members of the icefishing community!!!!

Cheers to more ladies on the ice (and may they all teach us something and outfish us once in awhile :)

Littleoldlady,

Picture of my wife, Elvie, and a trout she caught ice fishing. This is the first time she ever went fishing, summer or winter. Now she's hooked and went out and bought some new sorrels, waterproof coveralls, mittens, hat, you name it. We're going out again this weekend now that the weather has moderated a little. I will try to get her on-line; so she can talk with other ladies who enjoy ice fishing, but I wouldn't hold my breath as she is pretty shy at times.

Thank you, Prairiegoat...there seems to be a growing number of ladies on ice.  I am so glad she enjoys it...BTW..went to school
(in the Dark Ages, according to my kids) in Colorado Springs...
Which body of water did you take that picture on?  And let your wife know that there are a wide variety of fisherwomen who would
love to hear from her.

We were fishing on Skaguay up by Victor. You can sometimes catch and release 50+ 12" stocker trout a day; so it's fun for us and Jonathan who is six.

hello. Yes there are more fishing women out here. I don't post much as a rule. This is a great site full of  info and plenty of laughs. I live in tip of the mitt in Michigan. We are starting to get ice here on the west side. I walked on a small lake south of Charlevoix yesterday,it had about 3.5 inches of ice with about the same amount of snow. I also checked a small lake by ElkRapids but looked iffy so will check again in a few days.Should be ready for the week end.

Thank you for responding, a-net.  And I agree, this sight can be hilarious..sort of like listening at the locker room door at times!
We have ice...and do I mean...ice..have been walking on since 4 November, driving on the smaller lakes on the 15 November,
and on the big lake since just before Christmas.  My favorite fish to get is the lake trout...they are big...10 pounds and up..
but  we also fish for rainbow, pike, perch, and walleye.  I am retired...and one of my goals this year is to get the grand kids out
on the ice with me.
Enjoy the day...and I hope you get good ice fast.  Reading the posts of those who have been affected by El Nino and other
warming effects, it must be so frustrating not to have ice.
I would love to hear from you again!!

No prob, The reason i called myself that was because i am the only girl thats out there with like 20 guys. The funny thing is I catch just as many fish as them if not more. All the guys get mad at me. They love having me out there though cause i make the perfect drinks. LOL and i cook up a mean fish in the hut.
