never used to use one but now that I have a flasher its hard to fish without one. just nice to know if there is fish where you are fishing. I think they forgot the make them bite button on my flasher. kind of annoying when you can see them and they wont bite!!!

Don't use any electronics ,winter or summer. If I want to stare at a screen all day I'll sit here and type.

yes a flasher.  it died on Sunday.  Needs to go back to marcum.  Kind of embarrassed that I rely upon it so much.

No electronics for me.

I'll be able to afford electronics after I pay off my car.  :(

Flasher and converted open water unit.

Prefer the actual Marcum 3x-LTC but I have a converted Humminbird 365i that works just fine.

I usually give the Humminbird to people that our coming out to fish and/or use it as a back up.  It really saved me this last weekend.

yes. flasher.  I have 3. Cant be without a spare. Rookies I sometimes take with would never catch a fish and I started feeling guilty... they don't go very long and they end up buying their own. Amazing tool.

Flasher

All winter, and then right through the summer.

Marcum lx5 with a high speed transom mounted transducer.  Late night. Cruise slowly around until we mark a fish, stop the boat asap and drop 4oz glow jigs right on 'em.  When the bite is on, most fish we see will at least take a passing shot.

This run and gun method has been putting a good number of lakers in the boat for the last few years.

Impossible without electronics.

Yes, graph.  If you just run tipups or spear, you don't need one.  If you jig, it is a necessity.

Results are compiled below:

Total response = 57
Use some type of sonar = 47/57 (82%)
Use Flasher =35/57 (65%)
Use Graph style = 9/57 (16%)
Use both Flasher and Graph = 3/57 (5%)
No sonar = 10/57 (18%)

This is actually pretty surprising to me.   I  see more people on the ice without sonar.  Perhaps the ice shanty forum isn't a fair representation though.  Also surprised that 35/47 (74%) of sonar anglers use a flasher type.  I haven't had enough experience with both to know what and why I prefer.  is it target separation that is much better with the flashers???

IMO, that's exactly the difference, with my back up it's hard to tell different targets.  Even in flasher mode the regular open water unit has a hard time displaying the different type of return (i.e. fish and mud bottom) with the Marcum I can clearly tell if there are weeds, mud or fish hugging the bottom.  Differentiated by colors with the Marcum.  The newer graph styles may do a better job I'm not too sure.
