Need to Stock up on Jigs...Need advice
« on: Dec 11, 2009, 06:27 PM »
I'm fishing for crappy, perch and gills in some local lakes and ponds here in NY, and I'd like to stock up on some jigs.  What size and weight do you all recommend/find work the best for which fish?

My limited experience has proven to me what doesn't work, now I need to learn what does.

Thanks,

I would have to agree Jamming Jigs have a great selection jigs with great colors.  For panfish, I had good success with thier TIGER jig. I don't know which glow version but I don't think it made to much of a difference as long as it glowed.  For perch, this what I usually target... believe it or not a minnow on a small single hook 4, 6, 8, or 10 with a drop shot 12 inches above. If I felt like getting fancy I would use a tear drop jig (same setup).

I have read many people having great success with dropper rigs (like the hali), and will give it a try this winter.  Why not, I am up for learning new thing.

I've had good success with the Ole standby..Swedish pmples tipped with waxies or maggots.
NEVER lied about the size of the fish I caught.....just remember them being BIGGER!!

It gets personal with what type of jigs from person to person.  I always start with the largest jig (heaviest jig) I can work with, because it gets down fast.  Typically for panfish I start with 1/16 oz weight. Perch I step up to 1/8 oz weight.  I go for the larger of the fishes first.  If the fish look at my lure or bites and misses hook set, then I begin to down size.  I check the size of the fishes and make a decision to stay or move on.

From late January through Feb, I typically start with the smallest of jig I can work with.  Jigs with weights of 1/50 oz or lighter.  If the fishes are aggresive, then I start using heavier weights.  If I have to go deep water in 30 fow or more, I typically begin with a 1/32 oz weight.

go to janns netcraft and get a lot of unpainted jigs of different types and sizes. paint them all white with nail polish.  then buy more nailpolish of your favorite colors.  i use a permanent marker for the eyes and stripes. its cheap and makes you proud that you made it yourself. always check to see what colors other people are catching fish on.

You can't beat Jamminjigs for price (or quality). Tungsten jigs are not cheap.

my go to is the small hali or  a diamond jig from customjigsandspins.  I have luck on all colors of diamonds , but the trick for me is finding what size they want.

1.  Jammin Jigs

2.  jigging rap and a swedish pimple to make you feel better.

All you'll use is your jammin jigs.

If I were you I'd get a variety of jigs and go from there. As mentioned already JammingJigs. Also Marmish, Caty and Marmooska's. After using them a while you'll find what works best for you. One of my favorites from JammingJigs is the Flipper Tear. One of my favorites from Marmish is the Larva jig.
These are just a few examples. Experiment and have fun !

Whatever you but get at least two, preferably three of each style. If you only have one, it will be the hot jig of the day and you WILL loose it early in the day. Always have a backup.

If I start catching fish on a certain jig... my buddy starts digging through my tackle box and says.... you better have 2 of those............ lol So if you want a spare.... you better get 3!!

It has been my experience that you can't beat a Hali for most everything.  They get down quick to where the fish are.  I like copper or copper and blue.

techni-glo's work great for me.  i also like gill pills and small swedish pimples for more aggressive fish.  the techni glo's are my favorite because they can slurp in that treble hook with no effort, seems like you miss very few fish
