I second Prince! The minnows are always alive when you get to the lake. :)

Unlike many shops, they have what you need!

Moore's Bait & Tackle in Minneapolis. Better bait, better price, and closer than the big box places. Plus, Bob's a nice guy.

Hooked on Fishing (HOF) in Rochester. The owner - Mike - is a fisherman. Good bait, good tackle selection.

Monticello has new bait shop, next to the Monticello Pawn shop. It's the same owner as the pawn shop, Mike, and they are very nice in there and the only place to get bait in a 15 mile radius that I know of. If there are more in the area please let me know.

There is a nice little shop in Maple Grove...can't remember the name of it...but yeah good prices and good advice, and close to a few nice lakes too.

I love Prince, but it's out of my way.

Plaza Country Store in St Francis gets 90% of my business.  Frank will beat Ganders Price on anything and he thinks 8 or 9 suckers/shiners, makes 1/2 a dozen and 16-17 makes a dozen.  When a bait shop counts out 6 minnows, they lose me as a customer

The mom and pop's places are slowly disappearing. The one closest to me, in Stillwater closed 3 months ago. And now I rely on a Holiday in Hudson for my minners, self serve good prices and good bait but no bait shop guy.
Ounce in a while I'll go to blue ribbon bait in Oakdale, great bait shop but 24 miles round trip out of the way. Went there the other day to fill propane and the Grizz was there shooting the breeze behind the counter. Be cool to pick his brain a while for walleyes tips.

Can't appreciate Ziska's bait in Lakefield enough. 24 hour self serve minnows- winter  and minnows/leeches/crawlers in the summer. I hope people are honest. It'd suck if Ziska ever decided to stop having minnows. Thanks Mr. Ziska!!!

If I am home in Plymouth fishing Minnetonka, Medicine, Sarah, or Independence I always go to Wayzata Bait and Tackle in Wayzata. Bob and Tim always know the spots, the condition of the ice, and what they are bitting on. If I go to Mille Lacs, I always stop at Lundeen's Tackle Castle. Even if I stop at Reeds first. I also like Prince in Milaca, but stop there for their gun shop in the fall.

If & when every one that makes that purchase, wether it be large or small, would buy at the local bait shop ... The Mom & Pops Shops would be able to keep selling us minnows, grubs tackle and the other items that you may have to drive 20 miles to pickup if they close  the doors! So stop and think it over ... yes that big ticket item may cost some extra cash .... but whats the cost of your time and travel to the big guys store for a scoop of shiners!!! Me I would rather spend that time on the lake, then in town or on the road to or from there.

After the sale, it is the service that counts! Prince sold me a used MinKota about five years ago, a well used but functional transom mount. One day I was loading to go fishing and banged the prop of the MinKota and broke it. Prince was fresh out of new props, so they dug through a shed out back for 20 min and produced a used one off of a junk motor. :)

Will Walmart even handle warranty issues for you.....?

We do a lot of work in Morris,MN and we always drive by Fetterer's. How does the self serve work? Is it an honor system or what?
